NBC continues to forge ahead this pilot season with two more pilot pickups: to multi-camera comedy People Are Talking, from Growing Up Fisher creator DJ Nash and The Wedding Ringer producer Will Packer, and hybrid comedy Take It From Us, from Friends alum Greg Malins. Each revolves around two different couples.
People Are Talking, produced by Universal TV and Packer’s Will Packer Prods., is about a white and a black couple and examines sex, race and everything else your parents told you never to talk about. Nash and Packer executive produce.
People Are Talking extends the hot streak of race-themed or ethnical projects early in the pilot pickup stage in light of the success of How To Get Away With Murder, Empire and, to some extent, Black-ish and Cristela. On the drama side, NBC has ordered Diana Son’s Love Is Four Letter Word, which deals with “race, sexuality and gender roles”, and Silvio Horta’s The Curse Of The Fuentes Women, about three generations of Latino women.
This marks the first pilot order for Packer, the feature producer behind the Think Like A Man and Ride Along franchises, who made a push in TV this season with three comedy sales and also has an autobiographical half-hour at NBC and an Uncle Buck remake at ABC.
The pilot will be shot in multi-camera/hybrid style, which Malins knows well, having served as a key executive producer on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother. Malins and Schwartz, who developed another half-hour project together for Fox last season, executive produce alongside 3 Arts’ Michael Rotenberg and Jonathan Berry. Malins also co-created the TBS comedy series Ground Floor.
People Are Talking and Take It From Us bring the number of NBC pilots to nine: six comedies and three dramas. The network is expected to order about 10 comedies and eight drama pilots this season.
