Chris Hemsworth and Naomi Watts will be on hand to receive top honors at China’s 15th annual Huading Awards, for which honorees in film, television, dance, theater and music are determined by fan votes. Hemsworth, who stars in this weekend’s Blackhat and will reprise his role as Thor in the upcoming Avengers: Age Of Ultron, will be feted with the Huading Award for Best Global Actor in Motion Pictures. Two-time Oscar nominee Watts, who’ll star opposite Matthew McConaughey in this year’s Gus Van Sant drama The Sea Of Trees and later in the Divergent sequels, will receive Best Global Actor in Motion Pictures. The hardware will be handed out January 18 in Macau, China.
Pedro Almodovar joined the cast of the West End version of Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown for the curtain call during its opening night on Monday. The musical, at London’s Playhouse Theatre, is based on Almodovar’s Oscar-nominated 1988 black comedy. Episodes’ Tamsin Greig stars in her first stage musical role. According to the BBC, Almodovar said there was a “huge difference” between the West End production and the original Broadway version, which flopped in 2010. “In Broadway it was too big. Here they they’ve got the real dimension for the play,” he told the BBC. “There are two songs taken away and two new songs, and I think they are wonderful. The rest of the music sounds completely different.” Greig plays the main role of Pepa in the Madrid-based comedy about female friends and their chaotic lives. Bartlett Sher directs the musical which has garnered positive reviews.
Swipe Films has acquired UK and Irish rights to French dramatic comedy Paper Souls. The deal was announced just ahead of this week’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, which kicks off Thursday in Paris. Originally titled Les Ames De Papier, it stars Julie Gayet as a widow who hires a eulogy writer to teach her child about his dead father. Stephane Guillon, Jonathan Zaccai and Pierre Richard also star in the Vincent Lannoo-directed film. Films Distribution is handling international sales. Paper Souls had a limited release in France in 2013. Continuing its tradition of innovative marketing, Swipe has a deal with Eurolines to offer the first hundred couples who see the movie in London a heart-shaped padlock and a chance to win a trip to Paris. Previous themed schemes by Swipe for its releases have included discounts for diabetics (Tirez La Langue Mademoiselle) and offers of a free glass of vintage Bordeaux (You Will Be My Son).
