Which individuals were tops at the international box office in 2014? The answers may surprise you. Click on the slideshow above to launch the rundown of the biggest stars by grosses outside North America last year. As with 2013, two women made the Top 10, but only one is a repeat. None of the men who were in the Top 10 last year repeated that feat in 2014, and each of this year’s Top 3, regardless of gender, bested 2013’s No. 1 Dwayne Johnson who had a box office of $859.1M, according to our report at the time. Also of note, there were three non-American actors on the list last year and this year there are five in the Top 10.

These kinds of lists can often be prickly, based on the methodology used to arrive at the conclusions. For the 2014 chart, Robert Mitchell of BoxOfficeAnalyst.com, who provided Deadline with the results, measured them thusly: The list is made up of stars of live-action films where the person in question played a significant role in marketing and/or publicity or was a primary audience draw amongst the cast. Voice roles in animated films are not included since they are often dubbed in non-English-language markets.
