Bill Maher joined the war over American Sniper, saying it portrayed Chris Kyle as a “psychopath patriot and we love him.” He said the movie painted an unsubtle black-and-white/good-versus-evil/“we’re good, they’re bad” picture.

American Sniper has made more than $200 million at the domestic box office. “Hurt Locker made $17 million because it was a little ambiguous, and thoughtful,” Maher noted, “And this one was just, ‘American hero! He’s a psychopath patriot – and we love him.’” He did credit the movie with having more “ambiguity” than the book. “The idea that Americans cannot see any ambiguity, that somebody either has to be pure hero or pure traitor, is ridiculous.”
