Annapurna Pictures and VICE are teaming up to produce The Bad Batch, the next film from breakout indie helmer Ana Lily Amirpour. Amirpour made waves last year with her striking debut A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, the black and white Iranian vampire Western that debuted at Sundance and hit theaters in November.
Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and VICE’s Danny Gabai and Sina Sayyah will produce The Bad Batch, a dystopian love story set in a Texas wasteland. Sammy Scher is overseeing for Annapurna while Shane Smith and Eddy Moretti will exec produce for VICE. Casting is underway.
The Annapurna-VICE-Amirpour convergence is a match made in youthquake heaven, the latest bold investment in auteur voices by upstart financier Ellison. VICE will tap into its global media audience to chip in with US and select international marketing efforts. Annapurna and VICE teamed up previously as marketing partners on A24’s Spring Breakers, The Grandmaster, and Her. Meanwhile, Amirpour’s debut film A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night has proven so popular in its limited engagement at LA’s Cinefamily that its run has been extended through next week.
“Ana Lily is a force of cinematic nature,” said Moretti. “She inhabits that special place where the pop sensibility of the movies meets the deep sensuality of film art. It’s a tricky thing to pull off – creating this kind of wildly entertaining visionary cinema – but Ana Lily is powerful, so she can pull it off. I’m thrilled and honored to help bring The Bad Batch to life with my friends at Annapurna. This is going to be a lot of fun.”
