Fox has teamed with global youth media company VICE Media to form VICE Films, a joint venture to develop, produce and distribute films from emerging directors culled from VICE’s content creation initiatives. Fox will lend its production and distribution capabilities while VICE Media brings the new media expertise. VICE most recently released the Sundance winner Fishing Without Nets, the skateboard docu All This Mayhem and the Iranian vampire film A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. Films from the venture can be distributed theatrically or through digital. VICE will also have a first-look deal at Fox.

Fishing Without NetsThe joint venture was hatched by 20th chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos and VICE CEO Shane Smith and Chief Creative Officer Eddy Moretti. Latter will head the venture, with Danny Gabai steering development, production and marketing. Fox International Productions president Sanford Panitch and Content Management president Salil Mehta will oversee for Fox.

VICE Media had been in talks to be acquired by Time Warner to program its HLN Network, and when those talks cratered, A&E made a minority investment worth a reported $2.5 billion to utilize VICE’s ability to draw the young male demo.

“VICE Films is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for VICE,” Moretti said. “The success of Fishing Without Nets, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, and All This Mayhem showed us that we can play a vital role supporting exciting, bold, and visionary filmmaking…We will build a new global home for cinematic creativity, supporting filmmakers from development to distribution, and creating a new business model for the industry along the way.”
