How d’you like them oranges?

Paddington, based on author Michael Bond’s marmalade-loving bear, has given Studio Canal its biggest ever opening in the UK with a weekend total of $8,031, 207 (£5,112,425 ) from 520 sites. Writer-director Paul King’s well-reviewed family film also boasted a stellar per-screen average of $15,563 (£9889).

With a budget of $55 million, Paddington is Studio Canal’s most ambition production to date. The Euro giant releases the film today in France and tomorrow in Germany.

David Heyman (Harry Potter; Gravity) produced the film, which stars Hugh Bonneville and features the voice of Ben Whishaw as Paddington.

“Paddington’s famous label says ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you’ — and we are thrilled that the British public have taken this to heart and have responded with such warmth and joy to his arrival in the cinema,” Heyman said in a statement.
