Golden Globes Nominations: 'Birdman', 'Imitation Game' & 'Boyhood' Lead Film, More Surprises On TV Side

The Golden Globes spread the wealth among this year’s films and TV series when nominations were announced this morning. The group that picked last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner 12 Years A Slave has tapped IFC Films’ Boyhood, Sony Classics’ Foxcatcher, the Weinsteins’ The Imitation Game, Paramount’s Selma and Focus Features’ The Theory Of Everything in its top drama race, with most everything going to form in the major acting categories.

The Best Motion Picture Comedy race includes Fox Searchlight’s Birdman, the Alexander Gonzales Inarritu-directed pic that led the way yesterday at the SAG Awards. It did so this morning, too, with seven nominations followed by five apiece from Boyhood and Imitation Game. That helped give Searchlight a leading 12 noms total — it also had Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, which also scored a Best Comedy/Musical nom as did Disney’s Into The Woods, the UK pic Pride and the Weinsteins’ St Vincent.

On the TV side, broadcast comedies were among those that took a hit, with only the CW’s Jane The Virgin and its star Gina Rodriguez making the cut, otherwise overtaken by basic and premium cable and streaming services including Amazon’s first awards play Transparent, which is up for Best TV Series – Comedy or Musical.

  1. Some of these are laughable…but at least Foxcatcher and Gone Girl made strong showings here. As we know now, they’re better than the late releases (American Sniper, Unbroken, Into the Woods) that are being hidden from the public for as long as possible.

    Dear Academy voters,
Please watch Princess Kaguya!!! Far and away the best animated film in years. It’s egregious it wasn’t nominated here. It’s not only the most gorgeous animated film I’ve seen in a long time…but it’s 1000x better than that list of commercial and ultimately disappointing animated movies. Yes, even the Lego movie.

  2. really The Affair ? Thats a waste of nominations .Has anyone really watched this bore fest ? And Anniston- lol. What can you even say about that. Someone is earning their salary for sure

  3. Chastain is fantastic in A MOST VIOLENT YEAR. Glad to see her on here.

Same w Ruffalo. The most restrained performance in Foxcatcher but it rings so true.

    1. Ohh come on the Affair is like nothing we have ever seen before on tv and the performances are stunning!well deserved nominations

  4. Sony bought a nomination for Annie ? Or is this nomination for not nominating Quvenzanné wallis 2 years ago?

    1. Agreed. I saw that and laughed out loud. Haven’t seen ANNIE but even from the trailer you can tell there’s a casting issue there with the lead. You could also just read the leaked Sony power point slides to see how skittish they are about Wallis.

  5. Watch JANE THE VIRGIN! it is wonderfu and i am glad it is the list. Found this great list that shows what you can see online. Works more for tv than movies – but you can watch Jane on theCW

  6. I don`t understand the Foreign Press, on the TV nominations, How can they leave out the AWESOME work that Wendi McClendon-Covey is doing on The Goldbergs and the HIGHLY underrated The Middle and the lovely work that Eden Sher has done as Sue Heck? I really think Network and Cable shows should have their won catagories because some great work s being missed here.

    1. I haven’t heard of 90% of these shows or movies and I am a avid TV watcher. WEIRD. I will be skipping this year. The only 2 I see that TRULY deserves the wins is Viola Davis & James Spader. They both ARE AMAZING…..

  7. I’m really losing interest with these award shows. They don’t have a clue. I’ve tried watching some of these new shows on cable and stream networks and none are as good as the ones I watch. NCIS is the best thing on TV.

  8. Surprised and disappoitned that Lost Stars from Begin Again was not nominated for Best Song – it really was the best song from a movie this year, I can’t get it out of my head! Maybe Oscar will do it justice.

  9. What about son of anarchy that was the best show director all the doctors katey sagal singing other Jack some of them give him a shot at it you’d be surprised how many people would vote for them
