Comedy writer-director-producer John Hamburg (Meet The Parents franchise) is launching Particular Pictures. The company, which will develop television and film projects, has signed a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. This marks the first overall TV agreement for Hamburg who has been largely focused on features. On the TV side, he previously created the 2008 CBS comedy series Welcome To The Captain; co-wrote and directed the CBS comedy pilot Good Session this past season; and has directed episodes of Fox’s New Girl, produced by 20th TV, and Undeclared.
On the film side, Hamburg previously had a deal at DreamWorks, where he co-wrote, directed and produced I Love You, Man. Additionally, he co-wrote all three Meet The Parents films, Zoolander, and wrote and directed Along Came Polly.
“John is a fantastic writer-producer-director — a true “triple threat,” said 20th TV President of Creative Affairs Jonnie Davis. “He’s got incredible comedic taste and we’re excited to help him get his TV business off the ground. We’re betting on his vision, his contacts and his passion to create undeniable content for us.”
TV studios have been on the hunt for top comedy creative talent as the genre continues to struggle on the broadcast networks.
Hamburg has brought in Jacob Robinson, former VP at De Line Pictures, as Head of Development for both film and television projects at Particular Pictures. This marks a reunion for the pair, who met when Hamburg taught directing at NYU, and Robinson was studying for his MBA/MFA. Courtney Conwell has been hired as Creative Executive.
“During these turbulent and changing times in the entertainment industry, our mission at Particular Pictures is simple: Provide the best parking and bottled water in the business,” Hamburg said. “I’m excited to work with Dana (Walden), Gary (Newman), Jonnie and the entire team at 20th TV in pursuit of these goals and time permitting, to produce some great character-based TV comedies as well.”
In features, Hamburg, repped by WME and attorneys John Sloss and Jackie Eckhouse, is co-writing to direct Why Him? at Fox and The Sweet Spot for Warner Bros., and he is producing Drunk Wedding for Paramount Insurge.
At De Line, Robinson oversaw projects including Don’t Make Me Go, The Man In The Rockefeller Suit, and Ready Player One.
