EXCLUSIVE: Elvis & Nixon is hitting the road internationally with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which led strong foreign sales on the hot AFM title by taking multiple territories including Eastern Europe, Latin America, Portugal, Spain and Scandinavia. Alex Walton’s Bloom introduced the true-tale drama starring Oscar nominee Michael Shannon and Oscar winner Kevin Spacey to buyers this week in Santa Monica.
Elvis & Nixon centers on the historic meeting between Elvis Presley (Shannon) and President Richard Nixon (Spacey), when the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll came to the White House the morning of December 21, 1970. The two men, both at the height of their powers and conscious that they could not stay on top forever, shared one famous private moment in the Oval Office during which Elvis asked to be sworn in as a federal agent.
Liza Johnson (Hateship Loveship, Return) is directing from a screenplay by Hanala Sagal & Joey Sagal and Cary Elwes. Dallas Buyers Club producers Cassian Elwes and Holly Wiersma are producing, while Byron Wetzel and Prescience’s Tim Smith and Paul Brett are executive producing. Prescience is financing the film.
Elvis & Nixon additionally sold at AFM to Airlines (Jaguar), Australia (eOne), Greece (Italia), Iceland (SPWA), Israel (United King), Italy (Videa), the Middle East (Italia), Pan Asian TV (SPWA) and the UK (eOne). “This unfathomable true story attracted a flock of buyers,” said Walton. “Much like at the market, this untold story is bound to continue gaining attention worldwide.”
Bloom also hit AFM with a slate including the Shane Black detective thriller The Nice Guys, starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling; Gus Van Sant’s The Sea Of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey; Michael Apted’s Unlocked, starring Noomi Rapace; Renny Harlin-directed Skiptrace, starring Jackie Chan; and The Hunters, helmed by John Moore. The sales, production and financing shingle launched just before Cannes this year.
