HBO will televise The Concert for Valor, a Veterans Day event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. – featuring such musical acts as Eminem, Dave Grohl, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, and the Zac Brown Band – on Nov. 11.
The event will also include appearances by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, John Oliver and Jamie Foxx. Hanks and long-time producing partner Gary Goetzman are executive producers with Joel Gallen, who also will direct. HBO is co-sponsoring the event with Starbucks. Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen are advisors, overseeing veterans outreach and which veterans groups will benefit from the concert’s proceeds.
HBO will allow its affiliates to open the signal so non-subscribers to watch the special. Starbucks a year ago committed to hiring at least 10,000 veterans and the spouses of active-duty military personnel over the next 5 years, and CEO Howard Schultz has co-written a book called For Love of Country that spotlights the sacrifices of veterans. Proceeds from the book, which is due out from Knopf in early November, are also going to veterans groups.
