From a six-second viral video to a 30-minute TV comedy — that is the route five of the most popular personalities on short-form video platform Vine are taking with Hollywood And Vine, a scripted comedy produced by former The Office star Rainn Wilson. The cast includes Curtis Lepore, Jerry Purpdrank, Lele Pons, Simone Shepherd and Christian DelGrosso, who collectively have more than 30 million followers and 5 billion views on Vine, which features looped six-second clips. Wilson is producing the project, which will be written by Lance Krall (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, The Lance Krall Show). Staying close to reality, Hollywood And Vine, whose title takes after the famous Hollywood intersection, follows the lives of five social media stars at the intersection of life as Millennials trying to cross over into traditional Hollywood.
“We believe this show is going to be the first to celebrate these amazing, talented Viners in an authentic way and bring their style of humor to a broader audience,” Wilson said. “Plus, who doesn’t love a six-second twerk?”
Launched in 2012, the Twitter-owned Vine was at the forefront of the twerking craze last year, with its six-second format proving perfect for the explicit dancing with a slew of videos that helped propel the video-sharing platform to the zeitgeist of pop culture.
Wilson, who next toplines Fox’s midseason drama Backstrom, will be producing Hollywood And Vine through his media company SoulPancake, along with 3Arts, Ashwant Venkatram and Tony DeNiro. SoulPancake already is catering to Millenials with its YouTube channel, which has nearly 1.4 million subscribers.
