Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry is returning to ABC with Phantom Of The Opera, a contemporary reimagining of Gaston Leroux’s gothic novel that was the basis for the famous musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The Phantom Of The Opera drama, from Cherry and Sabrina Wind’s Cherry/Wind Prods. and ABC Studios, will be penned by Alan Zachary & Michael Weiner, writers of the musical First Date, which ran on Broadway last season and starred Zachary Levi and Krysta Rodriguez. It will be set in the sexy and cutthroat world of the modern-day music business. Unlike Webber’s creation, to which the TV show has no ties, the drama is not envisioned as a musical but will feature musical elements in the vein of ABC’s country music industry drama Nashville. Zachary, Weiner, Cherry and Wind — all repped by Paradigm — will executive produce.
Zachary & Weiner’s latest Broadway-bound musical, Secondhand Lions, had a world premiere at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre last year and is being produced by Warner Bros Theatre Ventures. The team also is writing a stage musical based on the 2009 New Line Cinema feature 17 Again.
Cherry, creator/executive producer of Lifetime’s Devious Maids, also from ABC Studios, is a free agent this season and has been selling around town. He has prep school spy drama Cheerleader Death Squad set up at the CW through CBS TV Studios with Neal Baer.
Cherry is also repped by Jon Moonves & Jean Tanaka, Wind by Michael Gendler, Zachary & Weiner by Michael Schenkman.
