Coming off its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, Inherent Vice is set for a gala screening at AFI Fest. Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s first film since 2012’s The Master will unspool November 8 at the Egyptian AFI FestTheatre in Hollywood. Joaquin Phoenix plays a drug-fueled detective Larry “Doc” Sportello investigating the disappearance of an ex-girlfriend in early-’70s Los Angeles. Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Benecio Del Toro, Katherine Waterston, Jena Malone and Eric Roberts also star along with Reese Witherspoon — who’s reuniting with Phoenix after their Oscar-winning roles in Walk The Line nearly a decade ago. The Warner Bros film, based on Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel, opens December 12. AFI Fest runs November 6-13 in Hollywood with A Most Violent Year as its opening-night film and Foxcatcher as the closer. The fest will also feature a conversation with Anderson.
