A new trailer for a whale of a tale has just been released by Warner Bros and Village Roadshow Pictures for In The Heart Of The Sea, the Ron Howard-directed adaptation of the Nathaniel Philbrick book. It’s the harrowing true survival story of the whaling ship Essex that inspired Melville to write Moby Dick. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, George Pollard, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Brendan Gleeson, Jordi Molla and Ben Whishaw as Melville.
In the winter of 1820, during the boom in the whaling business, Essex set out from New England and was torn apart by a mammoth whale. The boat went down, and that is really where this tale begins. It’s the story of cruel survival that involved leadership, cowardice, bad decisions, and cannibalism. I have been writing about the various attempts to adapt this book since it was first published and won the National Book Award in 2000, and it was Howard that finally got it made.
What do you think of the resulting film that Warner Bros releases in March?
