The first time it went out with a bang — this time it went out with a whimper; CNN’s Crossfire is no more. Again. The show had been missing in action for weeks and already some of its co-hosts — Stephanie Cutter, Newt Gingrich, S.E. Cupp and Van Jones — have been popping up as contributors around the network’s landscape. Some staff have been moved to other programs, and the remainder have been encouraged to apply for open positions within the bureau, source say — surprising, given that CNN is in the process of slashing about 300 positions.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Gupta MD is being phased out; Gupta and team will focus on breaking news. Ditto Elizabeth Cohen as the network’s medical unit is restructured — obviously it’s a hot beat right now. CNN Money With Christine Romans is toast; she remains anchor of Early Start and the network’s chief business correspondent. And, Unguarded With Rachel Nichols is history; she will continue as the network’s sole sports anchor, contributing across all platforms and hosting primetime specials. Nichols also continues her role with Turner sports.
But today’s big CNN headline is the cancellation of Crossfire, which had been exhumed in September of ’13, and quickly did not catch on with viewers. It was billed as a more intelligent, less shrill iteration of the old Crossfire, which debuted in 1982 and famously was cancelled in 2005 — not so long after Jon Stewart came on the show, purportedly to promote his new book, but in reality to scold the show’s stunned hosts for “hurting America.”

Crossfire Redux went on the first of its long-ish hiatuses last March, when CNN became obsessed with a vanished airplane, and some thought it was gone for good. Then, in May — just when you thought that what CNN‘s Missing Malaysian Airliner story really needed to liven things up was a fluid ounce of weed killer scientifically administered to some of the talking heads — the network instead abruptly brought Crossfire back, as if to signal to the country that its long CNN missing-plane nightmare was over. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-WI, and Rep. Karen Bass, D-CA, joined co-hosts Gingrich and Jones, who beamed at the camera as if their producer had brought them good news from a distant land.
But the show was pulled from the schedule again in July — another Malaysian airliner had caught CNN’s interest, and the network just last month said the show would remain on that break for a while, presumably to return in time for the election cycle, which clearly did not happen.

To many 24 hour news outlets. They all run out of time for guests. To much commercialization. Why not just run news 24/7? Have a host, do an interview, if it runs over who cares. All the shows are the same anyway.
“Too” many,….”Too” much,…come on man!
Putz.
Sir Bounce Alot…I agree totally! I’m seeing now that when the hosts take more time asking questions (putting in their often ridiculous two cents) than they allow the guest. THen they cut them off to go show a Viagra commercial. hmmph
The race is on….which will go off the air first….MSNBC or CNN?
And you think Fox News is safe to? It’s too exspensive to produce anything anymore. Overpaid news people telling us what’s wrong with the world or blaming Obama cause a ladybug is missing its spots! Like one letter writer said: just do 24/7 news without the hype. I don’t need bill o Reilly or megyn kelly or anybody telling me something I and everyone else can get for free!
It’s called Headline News. I dumped cable for streaming so I haven’t watched recently… but I enjoyed HNN for the very reasons you cite: just news. I hope they haven’t diluted their focus with “shows” but like I said… a bit out of touch w/Headline News.
Uhh, you are getting it for free
O’Reilly and Kelly are pundits. It is opinion not news. If you don’t like them don’t watch them.
FOXN is growing, not shrinking.
FOX News had the most watched cable channel in all of TV in the last quarter. Not most watched news….but the most watched channel. More viewers that USA, TNT, TBS or ESPN. FOX News is doing just fine.
I think you conflate news and opinion shows as one. I don’t watch it often but the cable ratings announcements that track watchers and demographics suggest you might be premature in announcing their demise.
Hopefully both!
Both will die in a tie!
There was an article in the NY Times on Sunday about MSNBC’s ratings free fall and the increasing urgency to do something about it. They’ve lost the battle of the narrative and are now being eclipsed by CNN. Comcast is said to be heavily in bed with the administration but given the ongoing disintegration of Obama not even halfway into a second term, I’m thinking there’s a serious shakeup coming. They’re a drain on the stock.
This has happened before. MSNBC and Fox News hit the air at about the same time in 1996, MSNBC having been created by a marriage of GE and Microsoft when Bill Gates and Jack Welch harbored fantasies of giving birth to a new network. Those two guys are long gone and the baby they gave birth to has been re-orged and reformatted and reborn more times than a tent preacher. Nothing ever seems to work. Phil Donahue was there and let go when he refused to support the second Gulf War. What Jack wants, Jack gets…or at least he used to. These days, we would need to ask Suzy about that.
Quite a few of the old timers at Fox came from NBC or CNBC or MSNBC. Cheryl Casone and Neil Cavuto were there. Brit Hume and Chris Wallace learned their craft at ABC during the glory days in the seventies.
I can’t think of anyone who went to CBS and left on their own. People either stay there forever or are fired. Katie Couric was asked to leave when she didn’t make it as a serious journalist. Mika Brzezinski was a lifer and got canned by Sean Mcmanus in the days when he ran the news division. Yes, she went to Madeira and Williams College due to family money and her father’s political influence. Yes, she has powerful friends. Yes, she’s very pretty – but that’s all. She’s well educated eye candy.
My vote is for MSNBC. I can handle the CNN personalities but not ED, Al, Maddow, Harris-Perry and Matthews.
Where you aware that all the MSNBC individuals mentioned above by Croft have parents that were siblings
when you get sick people as hosts , who wants to watch it. I can take both sides of a subject but these sick individuals are brain washed so bad and the money is there to support them spewing garbage so who is at fault. The dummies who watch it. So I as a smart 80 yearold woman would never watch that garbage and sooner than later they will all be gone. Fox is getting a bit crazy too. Too many guests to get a real story. Fewer guests and let them talk!!! More real people on to give their views not the hosts jamming their thoughts down our throats. Who the heck is that E Haselback to tell me what I should think she was on that no brain show Survivors and now from that she thinks she can tell me how I should think. Fox needs to stop with the dumb blondes already and get real. I get my news from the internet but most people my age just watch game shows, the garbage reality shows and main stream media. When I try to talk to them about a real issue they do not know what I am talking about. Some have said outright I get my SS ck what do I care what goes on. So dumb kids coming out of college, dumb seniors who do not remember WW!!, and the rest are on welfare.
MSNBC is still on the air????
Probably CNN.
MSNBC is funded via NBC and a couple of George Soros’s leftist groups.
Soros doesn’t care if MSNBC hemmorrages gallons of red ink – the Left needs MSNBC as a propaganda outlet.
I think Fox News will be just fine, Thatmanbolt. And I think you do too.
Let’s hope both will do the world a favor, and die a swift death.
Newt Gingrich and Van Jones? A gasbag and a communist? Gee, how could they miss with hosts like that?
That was the theory but I think a lot of folks don’t trust CNN anymore. Even Zucker says they no longer do hard news. When the guy on top says you’re dead, I guess that’s it…you’re dead.
Circular firing squad!…. present!…. ready!….. aim!….. watch your crossfire….. fire!…….
Layoffs and downsizing now that CNN is doing well with the ISIS/Ebola scares? I guess someone has his bonus tied to quarterly profits.
back in th 80’s it was a great show.I watched the show most every day/ The liberal person was a smart guy ( can not remember his name) I often disagreed with him. But he wanted the best for the country. The so called liberals of today are not that way
It was Alan combs
Alan Combs: “Smart guy”? Maybe, but very closed mind. Always digging into the minutia do support the talking points when he appears on O’Reilly. His counterpart at FN, Juan Williams has a little more diversity of leftward perspective. Both are likeable, and we expect them to support the agenda of the Left, but with some original thinking or off-set perspectives.
That combs is so closed minded he is a waste to listen to, Never gives credit to ANY conservative and just loves the bum in our White House and Juan Williams is a close run with Bob Beckel close behind. It amazes me how intelligent people can get so brainwashed. Juan’s kids are both conservatives. Guess they didn’t drink the kool aid their father did. I think fox needs to get rid of that bunch and get some liberal thinkers in who can see both sides. Then you can have a real debate.
I think you’re talking about Tom Braden and after that Mike Kinsley. Braden was a Dartmouth grad who died in ’09 and Kinsley is still around, has Parkinsons but is doing well. He and Patty are living their lives serving others.
Cancel CNN and MSNBC and save everyone from more misery. Both are an insult to common decency and common sense. Embarrassing.
It would certainly help reduce the unnecessary costs of your local satellite/cable bill – especially if you never watch it.
Excellent comment. The Left has been destroying America via media and universities so one cancellation will not mean much but it helps. Back when Bob Novak was there, it was an exciting program.
Please take Fox News along. My god the propaganda and fear mongering on that channel. It’s not even news
more intelligent, less shrill!
Sounds like a new motto for CNN. They could do segments on it, like they are doing on discovering Anderson Cooper’s roots. Each celebrity CNNer could be filmed getting “more intelligent, less shrill” tattooed on their foreheads.
Must be a bear of a job– which do I cancel first, THIS show with no viewers, THAT show with no viewers or all of these OTHER shows with no viewers…?
Fox may be the ratings leader but all three, Fox, MSNBC, and CNN are an embarrassing train wreck. Fox commentators are criticizing their own co-pundits. The hysteria “the big three” are whipping up over ebola ought to be prosecutable because it is the most cynical and dangerous race for ratings I’ve seen, well, since last week anyway. This is the aids hysteria redux.
How about covering the news and keeping your opinion to yourself? Discussions are great if people can leave self promotion out of it. Let’s hear different perspectives and not biased, baseless talking points.
West coast i couldn’t have said it better myself. As i watch the the 24 hr news networks i marvel at the lack of news. You would think they would be to go in depth on issues. They have 24 hrs. Instead they make stuff up and report rumors. Everyone has an opinion on everything. Sometimes i want to just know what happened with a little context provided. Don’t try to tell me what to think. If you are going to give an opinion have an intelligent articulate person with a different opinion on for context. Someone that can keep up in a debate and add factual information to the conversation
Memo to Jeff Zucker:
Jeff, get the Hell out of TV. Just leave the business altogether. Admit you’re a failure and find something else to do.
Wish a channel would deliver just world headlines in the first 15 minutes, like the old Headline News–before plunging into boring analysis and never-ending speculation.
S.E. Cupp is the only one that doesn’t come off as a “talking head.” l like her and think she well go on to do well for herself… IMO
Jon Stewart got his assistant kicked in that interview!
Let’s see,
Could anyone be more annoying then Stephanie cutter,
people are so tired of Newt’s stupid pumpkin grin and his never ending evolving positions,
S E Cupp’s look went out about the same time as Ashley Banfield’s,
And who would want to listen to Van “the America hating Commie” Jones for a nanosecond.
CNN continues with just stellar programming choices.
You hit the nail on the head, I could not have said it better.
Newt’s pumpkin grin! Perfect.
Well, let’s see…
On one side, a couple of pseudo-conservatives that are all over the lot with their views…
The “left” side of the show was hosted by a serial liar and a known, admitted communist…
Why would that not go over well with a TV audience?
What a mess, CNN. What an absolute mess.
With a cast like that how could they NOT fail miserably! The worst of both sides of the political spectrum!
Yeah, both sides — the left and the middle.
Karma….. You dirty dirty girl…!
Anyone remember “AIR AMERICA”? This is what happens to known, liberal programming that does nothing but distort, lie, fabricate, and brow-beat the Uneducated into believing how LIES are the accepted Liberal truth.
you are right, did not last long as the lies just kept going and going. only the brain dead liberals listened to it. I think we need news and only news. No opinions, I think guests should get more time to give their opinion if they are qualified and have facts that the public needs to know but the hosts should not be giving their opinions. The guest should be allowed to tell us what they have facts about and let the viewers make up their own minds by doing their own research. Thing is most people are too lazy to do their own research and just believe whatever garbage is spewed to them. That is why our country is in such a mess. We would not have this president destroying our country if people had not listened to the lies and garbage on the main stream media day after day. The media is dangerous when they can brainwash people who are not educated and who are too lazy to form their own opinions and get swayed by what is over the airways. Time to change the format of all the news programs. You can start at 5AM and till 11 PM you hear the same old same old all day with their opinions. I for one have tuned them all out. Do you get AlJazeer on TV??
The Jeff Zucker “Trail of Destruction” World Tour continues…
I agree. He ran NBC into the ground. Now he is doing it to CNN.
Stephanie Cutter, Van Jones and Newt Gingrich? Whoever thought that mix was anything but a viewer repellant needs to fall on his/her sword and save CNN that salary too.
Perhaps if CNN went back to honest journalism and reported the news rather than propaganda and hiding the truth about the egregious Obama and his administration, they would not be in this situation. Americans are waking up to the lies and distorted truth spewed by the likes of CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NBC, et al.
They should just surrender and get rid of it entirely…focus solely on refining Headline News.
Delicious news …. enjoy it with some fava beans and a nice glass of Chianti!!
