Now it truly begins. The new NFL season kicked off last week in primetime on NBC, ESPN and CBS and now the Big 4 really start rolling out the new and returning shows of the new TV season. On Fox it was a combo on Tuesday of an already launched newbie and two sitcom staples with Utopia (1.0/3) beginning the night. After a freefalling first week, the second Tuesday airing of the social experiment reality show saw one pioneer exit and another join the team. It also saw Utopia offering a special sneak peek at Fox’s upcoming Batman prequel series Gotham, which premieres on September 22. All that put together actually gave Fox’s Utopia its first Live + Same Day lift since the show’s September 7 debut with an 11% rise among adults 18-49 from last Tuesday. Being that last Tuesday’s show saw a strong 56% rise in Live + 3 ratings to a 1.4/5, the future might be looking a bit brighter for Utopia.
Still the struggling Fox freshman was third in its 8 PM time slot as it faced off against both Big Brother (2.3/8) and the first Dancing With The Stars (2.1/7) results show of the ABC series’ new season. Having been shifted as a result of CBS now showing Thursday Night Football, the second Tuesday for BB was even with its September 9 show. On DWTS, one couple suffered elimination but the show itself saw a 13% drop from Monday’s premiere. However, viewershipwise, the DWTS results show was easily the most watched show of the night with 12.28 million tuning in. Ending the night for ABC, 20/20’s latest “From Hell” special was down 33% from its August 26 predecessor.
Following Utopia, love was in the air on Fox on both the new season debuts of New Girl (1.6/5) and The Mindy Project (1.3/4) and last night – though in very different ways. Firmly in its regular 9 PM Tuesday slot, the fourth season premiere of the Zooey Deschanel starrer saw a guest appearance by Jessica Biel and one very uncomfortable wedding. It also saw New Girl down a hard 44% from its Season 3 debut of September 17 last year, which got a 2.9/8 on an equally competitive night. The third season launch of Mindy Kaling’s comedy wasn’t quite a marriage ceremony but it was all about being a couple. Also taking a tumble, The Mindy Project fell 31% from the 1.9/5 of its last season debut, also back on September 17, 2013. Certainly, New Girl and Mindy Project’s new lead-in didn’t do them any favors from last year when they were part of a full comedy night with the premieres of the now cancelled Dads and the Golden Globe-winning Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which had a 2.1/7 and a 2.5/8 respectively. Comparing this season’s debuts to last season’s finales, New Girl was up 33% in the key demo while Mindy was even with its May 6 ender.
As some shows return, one vet is preparing to take its final bow for the season. With the Season 9 winner-announcing finale of America’s Got Talent (2.5/8) set to air Wednesday, Tuesday saw the Top 6 acts take it to the stage one last time with both an old and a new routine. With the finale fever that AGT seems to catch every year, the 2-hour live show from Radio City Music Hall leaped up 32% among the 18-49s from its September 9 performance broadcast. In fact, the top rated show of the night on Tuesday, AGT even bopped up 4% from the comparable night last season. Now let’s see how that season ender and winner declarer does tonight but last night NBC easily was tops in both ratings (2.1/7) and viewership (9.35 million).
The CW was all encores on Tuesday.
