UPDATE, 10:49 AM: While summer is not officially over for another 20 days, the season definitely turned a corner this Labor Day weekend in most people’s minds. That’s partially true on television as well as summer shows continue to end, wind down, get previewed and the NFL is about to start its regular season on September 4. There was no football last night, but all of the other categories were in play on a night when all of the Big 4 were on the field with originals. It was sultry night on ABC with Bachelor In Paradise (1.2/4) and the Season 2 finale of Mistresses (0.8/3). Back in its regular slot, the 2-hour reality romance spin-off was steady among adults 18-49 with a 8% dip. Wrapping up it’s latest 13-episode run this year, the as yet unrenewed 10 PM soapy drama was down 11% from last week when it faced the last hour of NBC’s telecast of the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards. Finale to finale, the second cycle ender of Mistresses took a 27% fall from the 1.1/4 of its September 9, 2013 Season 1 finale to match a series low in fast nationals. While also on a Monday, Mistresses’ first season ender ran at 9PM not 10 PM like this year’s finale. Also, while it faced NBC’s American Ninja Warriors as it did this year, the ABC show only had a repeat of Two & A Half Men to contend with on CBS.
Speaking of the Eye, Under The Dome (1.2/4) was the only original on that network last night besides the CBS Fall Preview (0.8/3). Moved up from last year’s September 12 airing date, this year’s look at the season about to begin took a 42% dive from the 1.4/4 that the half hour preview got in 2013. Unlike last night, that September 12, 2013 preview was on a Thursday facing Fox’s The X-Factor and NBC’s Million Second Quiz experiment. Also facing the Emmys last week, Under The Dome was down this week by 14% – in preliminary ratings, that’s a series low for the drama based on Stephen King’s writings. Turning back to the end of summer again, UTD actually does conclude its second season on the last day of the season – September 22.
Being a Monday, Fox had a double serving of Gordon Ramsay as usual. MasterChef (1.9/6) and Hotel Hell ( 1.3/4) were down 5% and 13% respectively from their August 25 shows. However, Masterchef was tied with NBC’s American Ninja Warror (1.9/2) for the top rated show of the night. On NBC, it was back to normal after the Emmys with Running Wild With Bear Grylls (0.9/3) and the penultimate episode of ANW this season. From their last originals on August 18, Running Wild fell 18% while ANW saw a slight rise of 6% among the key demo. With a 1.6/5 rating each, Fox and NBC were tied for the top spot among the 18-49s for the night. CBS was No. #1 with viewers with 5.36 million watching.
The CW’s sole original of the night was America’s Top Model (0.4/1 ), which was even with last week.
PREVIOUS, 8:37 AM: Looks like there are still a few stragglers coming back from the Labor Day long weekend – including fast nationals for last night’s primetime. Delayed for a couple of hours, ratings from Nielsen will be available around 10:30 AM PT, we’re told. We will post the results for Under The Dome, MasterChef, the Season 2 finale of Mistresses and more then.
