Austria has selected Andreas Prochaska’s The Dark Valley as its official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards. Sam Riley stars in the German-language revenge Western based on the bestseller by Thomas Willman. In the film, a stranger arrives in a remote high mountain valley toward the end of the 19th century and asks the clannish village community if he can take shelter for the winter. But he knows the villagers’ gloomy secret, and a mysterious series of deaths ensues. Produced by Stefan Arndt of Xfilme, the pic won the German Film Prize and seven Lolas after premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival in February. Watch the subtitled trailer above.

Former Sony Pictures Television execs Ed Louwerse and Julian Curtis have launched independent distribution company Lineup Industries. The firm will focus on repping international sales of formats and derived IP. News comes just ahead of the Mipcom TV market, which Lineup will attend. Louwerse most recently was Managing Director and SVP at SPT and previously headed the international distribution division of Endemol. At SPT, he was responsible for overseeing international sales including such titles as Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Dragon’s Den. Curtis previously was  responsible for formats distribution in major territories including EMEA and Asia Pacific at SPT.

venice_postman_white_nights-thumb-630xauto-50014Antipode Sales & Distribution will handle global sales for Andrei Konchalovsky’s The Postman’s White Nights, which will have its World Premiere on September 5 in competition at the Venice Film Festival. Written, directed, and produced by Konchalovsky and featuring non-actors, the film tells the story of a postman (Aleksey Tryaptisyn) who is the sole connection to the outside world for the residents of a remote village in northern Russia. But when the boat he uses to bridge the two civilizations has its motor is stolen and the woman he loves escapes to the city, the postman follows, desperate for a new adventure and a new life. Dark Valley looks beautifully shot but the acting is meh.

Global communications agency Way to Blue has announced the acquisition of Abundant Limited, the UK-based digital creative and public relations agency. Subject to due diligence, the deal would see key staffers from Abundant’s PR, Social and Creative departments join Way to Blue starting October 1, based at its London headquarters. Shane Wall, Abundant’s owner and Managing Director, will not be taking an operational role at the merged company and instead will focus on producing.

bobby-moore1Timeless Films said today that production will begin next month on a feature-length documentary celebrating the life of Bobby Moore, the  iconic golden boy of English football who captained the national side to victory in the 1966 World Cup Final. Written and produced by Matt Lorenzo and directed by Finn McGough, the docu will blend archive footage of Moore’s life and times with interviews and the real stories behind Moore’s footballing glory, his battles with cancer; the facts that led to false accusations about a stolen bracelet and the lack of respect he received in later life.
