Studiocanal has acquired rights to Tom Wood’s critically acclaimed Victor The Assassin book franchise for director Pierre Morel to helm and The Picture Company to produce with Sentient Entertainment. The tie-up comes after Studiocanal and Morel collaborated on The Gunman, the action thriller starring Sean Penn, Javier Bardem, Idris Elba and Ray Winstone that Open Road Films will release in February. A franchise play is being eyed using Wood’s six-book series.

Pierre Morel Victor The AssassinAndrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Company are producing alongside Sentient’s Renee Tab and Christopher Tuffin. It marks the first collaboration under Picture Company’s just-announced new deal with Studiocanal. Rona and Heineman, who launched their own shingle after exiting Silver Pictures in January, also produced Gunman as well as Non-Stop for Studiocanal; Sentient most recently packaged and produced David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars. Ron Halpern will oversee the new pic for Studiocanal.

The first book in Wood’s series, The Killer, will likely kick off the franchise. It centers on Victor, a mysterious, quick-witted and charismatic gun for hire whose conscience begins to catch up with him and as a result puts him at odds with his employers.
