Joaquin Phoenix plays a drug-fueled investigator in writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s first film since 2012’s The Master. Inherent Vice follows detective Larry “Doc” Sportello investigating the disappearance of an ex-girlfriend in early-’70s Los Angeles. Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Benecio Del Toro, Katherine Waterston, Jena Malone and Eric Roberts also star along with Reese Witherspoon — who’s reuniting with Phoenix after their Oscar-winning roles in Walk The Line nearly a decade ago. The Warner Bros film, based on Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel, screens Saturday at NYFF and opens December 12.
