EXCLUSIVE: Chernin Entertainment is working with Mattel to help develop an Ever After High feature film based on the popular toy line (and which has already morphed into an animated kids series). The brand is ripe for a feature film franchise. It’s based on the make-believe teenage sons and daughters of famous fairy tale parents such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, The Big Bad Wolf, Goldilocks, King Charming, Rapunzel, the Frog Prince, the Swan Princess, the Pied Piper, Robin Hood, Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo Beep, the Three Little Pigs, and a host of fairy godmothers. You name a fairy tale and they have a kid.
That’s rich material for a company which has done exceptionally well developing one of the most successful franchises around: The Planet Of The Apes redos.
The storyline is about how these kids believe they must carry on their parent’s destinies because if they don’t, their parents’ stories will forever be lost and the characters will disappear forever. Yet, being teens, they struggle with wanting to break out of the mold and be their own people.
Ever After High is wildly popular among young girls. I first heard about it with my young nieces who follow every movement of these characters like a children’s soap opera.
Jenno Topping is overseeing the development with Mattel as is Peter Chernin, who would produce the feature with Topping.
Earlier this summer, Mattel announced a new animated original series for kids which will premiere in all Netflix territories in early 2015. They plan to feature a long-form animated movie Spring Unsprung before that on the streaming service.
