On a night that saw the official season kickoff of ESPN’s Monday Night Football, the field was packed in broadcast primetime with one finale and several shows moving towards their own season-enders. As MNF started cable’s NFL season, ABC’s Bachelor In Paradise (1.8/5) had its freshman finale. Two things to note: One, ABC was showing the Detroit Lions-New York Giants game on its NYC and Motor City affiliates, so its numbers will surely be inflated. Secondly, at least one couple found love on the two-hour season ender, which soared 38% among adults 18-49 compared with last week’s show.
As it stands, that’s a high for the newbie reality show. We’ll see what those numbers turn out to be in likely adjustments later today. Either way, the combining of also-rans from The Bachelor and The Bachelorette did well enough for ABC since its August 4 debut for the network to renew it for a second season. Over the summer, BiP was the second-highest-rated new series behind NBC’s Night Shift, which had powerhouse America’s Got Talent as its lead-in. ABC ended Tuesday with an encore of Shark Tank, which returns for its sixth season September 26.
Keeping Bachelor In Paradise’s likely pumped-up results in mind, it is unlikely that the ABC show will stay tied with Fox’s MasterChef (1.8/5) as the night’s top-rated show. The penultimate episode of Season 5 of the Gordon Ramsay sereis saw a final three contestants in place for next week’s sizzling finale. Week-to-week, MC dipped 5% from its September 1 show. Overall, Fox won the night in 18-49s while ABC took the top spot in total viewers with 5.67 million tuning in.
With two weeks to go until its Season 2 finale, Under The Dome (1.4/4) was the only original on CBS last night. After hitting a low in preliminary ratings last week, the drama based on Stephen King’s writings was up a solid 17% from its September 1 episode.
NBC didn’t have any NFL on last night but the home of Sunday Night Football sure was active. Opening the night was Running Wild With Bear Grylls (1.1/3). After a double-digit fall last week, it was up 22% among the key demo last night. Leading up to next week’s three-hour ‘USA vs. the World’ special, American Ninja Warriors (1.7/5) last night wrapped the Las Vegas finals of its third season on NBC. The two-hour competition show was down 11% from last week.
The CW’s America’s Next Top Model (o.4/1) was even with its September 1 episode.
