Lifetime spread the teaser for its Nov. 15 biopic Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B throughout social media. Strutting the R&B singer’s style is Alex Shipp, star of Nickelodeon’s House of Anubis. She replaced Disney Channel star Zendaya who backed out of the project days after her attachment was announced. Based on Christopher Farley’s book Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, the TV film, executive produced by talk show host Wendy Williams, follows the singer’s Star Search debut at age 10 to being crowned Princess of R&B. On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas after filming the music video for her single “Rock the Boat.” At the time, Aaliyah was seguing on to the big screen in such features as Rome Must Die and the Anne Rice adaptation Queen of the Damned. She ranks No. 10 on Billboard’s most successful R&B artists of the past 25 years.
