EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has tapped Australian actor/filmmaker Kieran Darcy-Smith to direct Blackwater, a fact-based story that is being scripted by Gideon Yago. Jon Peters brought the project into the studio and is producing.
Blackwater is the true story of the rise of Erik Prince’s privatized military company Blackwater Worldwide, which became a controversial yet key player in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Four former guards from the security firm are facing trial in the killings of 14 Iraqi civilians and the wounding of 18 others in bloodshed in Baghdad that inflamed anti-American sentiment around the globe in 2007. The contractors were working for the State Department and Blackwater claimed the deadly force was necessary.
Darcy-Smith, who acted in films that include Animal Kingdom, wrote and directed Wish You Were Here. He is part of the Blue Tongue Group out of Australia with Joel Edgerton, Nash Edgerton, David Michod, Luke Doolan, and Spencer Susser. He’s also attached to direct By Way Of Helena with Mandeville producing. He’s repped by WME and managed by Magnolia Entertainment. Chantal Nong and Racheline Benveniste overseeing for WB.
