The world may be have been decimated by a virus on TNT‘s The Last Ship but the ratings were alive and kicking for last night’s premiere. With 5.3 million total viewers the Michael Bay EP’d post-apocalyptic drama outperformed ABC’s heavily promoted Rising Star and ended up on the top of the 2014 cable debuts so far. The show drew 1.5 million viewers among Adults 18-49 and 1.7 million viewers among the 25-54 demo. Those results that also render the Eric Dane starrer sea-based series the best result in the cable world this summer. Over all its plays, Last Ship had 7.4 million total viewers with 2.3 million among Adults 18-49 and 2.6 million among Adults 25-54
With a 1.2 among the 18-49s, Last Ship is the second best drama debut of the past few weeks behind the 1.6 NBC’s The Night Shift. The medical drama launched on May 27 with America’s Got Talent as a lead-in. Back for a new season, Last Ship’s 10 PM lead-out sci-fi drama Falling Skies had 3.7 million viewers and 1.3 million among the 18-49s and 1.5 million among the 25-54s. That’s down 12% among total viewers from 4.21 million who watched the Steven Spielberg produced series 2-hour Season 3 premiere on June 10 last year.
