Gangster Squad helmer Ruben Fleischer has closed an overall deal with Universal Television. Under the two-year pact, Fleischer will develop new drama and comedy programming for both network and cable. He also will work with and supervise other writers on projects that he will executive produce and occasionally direct. In addition, Fleischer announced the formation of his new production company, The District, and has brought on David Bernad, most recently with RipCord Prods, as producing partner.

“Ruben is wildly creative and his work successfully spans comedy and drama,” said Universal Television’s Bela Bajaria. “His talent and enthusiasm will be a welcome addition to our strong team of creators at Universal Television.”

Fleischer, repped by UTA and attorney Warren Dern of Sloan Offer Webber Dern, made his feature directing debut in 2009 with Zombieland. He most recently helmed Gangster Squad for Warner Bros, starring Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn and Emma Stone. Additionally, Fleischer is attached to direct Spy Hunter for producer Dan Lin and Warner Bros.; direct and produce Zombieland 2 at Sony; and direct and produce an untitled sci-fi project at Sony.

As a producer, Fleischer has Two Night Stand starring Miles Teller in postproduction that he produced with Beau Flynn.

On the television side, Fleischer co-created and produced MTV’s Rob & Big, He also has directed numerous videos for Funny or Die and began his career as a music video director.
