Pretty Little liarsTuesday’s fifth-season starter of ABC Family‘s Pretty Little Liars premiered with 2.7 million viewers and a 1.1 demo rating, falling behind its fourth-season kickoff (3.0 million viewers and 1.3 demo rating) and that season’s finale (3.1 million viewers and 1.3 demo rating). But, the network noted, it was Tuesday’s No. 1 ranked scripted series among women 18-34 and 12-34, behind only ABC’s broadcast of the NBA Finals.  The series, which already has been picked up through a seventh season, was Tuesday’s most Tweeted TV telecast, becoming its 4th consecutive premiere to amass more than 1 million tweets.

After Liars, the launch of new series Chasing Life clocked 1.3 million viewers and a 0.5 in the demo. ABCF noted it was cable’s No. 1 telecast in its hour among 18-34 year olds and 12-34 year olds. The network also noted Chasing Life out-delivered the year ago launch of The Fosters, by 14% in women 18-34 and 12-34. But it was Twisted that debuted in the post-PLL time slot a year ago, not The Fosters  — and, compared to Twisted, Chasing Life tumbled 16% in overall audience, and a tick in the demo, though Chasing Life edged out Twisted in adults and  women 18-49, and it was virtually flat in 18-34 demos.

In other Tuesday ratings, USA Network’s Royal Pains returned for Season 6 and logged 2.4 million viewers and a 0.6 demo ratings, which is a slide of 35% in overall audience compared to last year’s opening crowd of3.7 million, and down a tenth in the demo.  More to the point, Tuesday’s opening stats are way down compared to the 5.8 million viewers and 1/8 demo rating the series commanded with its Season 2 opener back in ’10.
