BREAKING: Marvel just announced that they have hired Peyton Reed to direct Ant-Man with Adam McKay to help script the superhero flick, ending the game of musical chairs on this film about who will helm the film. Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas are leading the cast of the film which will bow on July 17, 2015. Rudd is playing Ant-Man, of course, and Douglas will portray Dr. Hank Pym, Ant-Man’s mentor who helps protect the superhero’s secrets and develops the potion that turns humans into ant-sized. The film, based on the Marvel comic book from the 1960s, goes before the cameras this fall.
McKay was previously in talks to helm the Marvel property but dropped out last week; yesterday both Reed and David Wain were being talked up as the two possible helmers. That followed the surprising departure of Edgar Wright at the helm over creative differences. Interesting that Marvel head Kevin Feige is putting his bets on two filmmakers who lean heavily in comedy (and therein may lie the rub).
Reed has done much work in TV and also directed the comedies The Break-Up, Yes Man and Bring It On. He was previously considered to direct The Fantastic Four at Fox but that went to director Tim Story. Reed will now be in the position to prove himself as a franchise director, having done such TV work as The New Girl, the telefilm To My Future Assistant and going way back The Weird Al Show and the animated The Back To The Future series. But, most recently, he sealed deal to go before the cameras on The Fifth Beatle, which tells the story of Brian Epstein, often referred to as ‘the fifth Beatle.’ Epstein discovered The Beatles, secured their first record deal and was scoffed at when he told the world this band would be bigger than Elvis. (Little known is that William Morris actually passed on representing the Beatles at the time after a young agent there tried to get the agency to sign them. The agency repped Elvis at the time). Both Reed and McKay are repped by WME.
McKay is the former Saturday Night Live writer who grew up on that show with Will Ferrell and moved with him to feature films. Rudd is also known for his comedic turns so I expect there will be a heavy dose of tongue-in-cheek with this one. McKay is repped by WME.
This is the logline of the movie that Marvel put up on their site: “Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.”
Ant-Man and Dr. Pym save the world? Okay, this could be really witty and fun or the worst Marvel ride ever. Only time will tell but audiences will have to wait until 2015 to find out.
