Shine International has taken on international distribution for ITV’s Code Of A Killer and Channel 5’s Rome: The World’s First Superpower. The former, produced by World Productions, tells the true story of Alec Jeffreys’ discovery of DNA fingerprinting in the 1980s and its first use by detective David Baker (played by David Threlfall) in solving a double murder only three miles from Jeffreys’ lab. James Strong (Broadchurch/Gracepoint) is set to direct the two-part drama, which shoots in September. Rome: The World’s First Superpower is co-produced by 360Production and GroupM Entertainment. It looks at the major heroes and villains from Hannibal and Julius Caesar to Spartacus and Cleopatra and tells the story of how one small city among many conquered the world and then ran it for nearly 1,000 years.
CBS Studios International and France’s M6 are extending their multi-year volume agreement to bring shows from the CBS network to French audiences. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The partners have a long-standing relationship that began in 2003. As part of the extension, M6 will air the second season of Under The Dome and the Halle Berry starrer Extant.
Indie distributor Dogwoof has acquired UK theatrical rights to documentary The Overnighters. The film by Jesse Moss debuted at Sundance and took the Documentary Special Jury prize for Intuitive Filmmaking. Its UK premiere will come at Sheffield Doc/Fest and it will then get a late-2014 release. The film tells the plight of men looking to strike it rich in the North Dakota fracking business, but who are essentially left homeless faced with the realities of limited work. Enter Pastor Jay Reinke who transforms his church into a shelter for the men, and must battle to keep it open against the wishes of the townsfolk. Drafthouse Films is releasing in the U.S. later this year.
Starz Digital Media is giving viewers in the UK an early purchase opportunity for Starz Original series, Power. Beginning June 9, the first hour-long episode of the nightclub/drug trade drama is available in the UK via Amazon Instant Video, blinkbox, Google Play, iTunes, Sony Entertainment Network, and Xbox Video. New episodes will continue to be made available for individual purchase in the UK on Mondays following the Saturday night premiere on Starz in the U.S. Omari Hardwick stars in Power with Lela Loren, Naturi Naughton, Joseph Sikora. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is exec producer. Courtney Kemp Agboh created the series which aired for the first time Stateside on Saturday. That premiere episode had previously been rolled out domestically via social media and other digital platforms since the end of May.
