After the group Right Wing Watch reported the twins who star in HGTV’s recently greenlit reality series Flip It Forward are anti-gay activists, the network said this morning it had given the hook to the series, which was set to debut in October. Yesterday, HGTV said it was “currently in the process of reviewing all information about the Benhams and we will provide an update as soon as possible.” Then came a tweet today:

Right Wing Watch reported Tuesday that David Benham had led a prayer rally outside of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC in 2012, in which he told conservative radio host Janet Mefferd that America’s Christian majority must repent for tolerating “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” and “demonic ideologies tak[ing] our universities and our public school systems.” He also said his brother had joined him in the prayer protest. The group also claimed David leads protests outside of abortion clinics.
HGTV announced at its upfront presentation last month in Los Angeles that it had picked up the home-flipping series about brothers David and Jason Benham. The network’s description of the show at the time: “After a decade of flipping houses for profit, brothers David Benham and Jason Benham now help families buy the homes they never thought they could afford. In each episode, the guys help a deserving family find a fixer-upper and transform it into their forever home — with a healthy dose of sibling rivalry between the brothers along the way.” At the same presentation, HGTV also announced it had greenlighted a design competition show from Ellen DeGeneres.




Yet another case of the one-sided view of Hollywood. Nevermind that this show might have been a great cause and done something good for needy families. You’re only allowed to think one way in this town, and if you don’t, say goodbye to your career. Hypocrisy at it’s finest.

Excuse me? Are you kidding? Didn’t Melissa Etheridge proclaim she was going “exercise her civil rights” and marry her partner after the latest Supreme Court ruling? Calling the right for homosexuals to marry a “civil right” has been at the core of the narrative for the progressive gay agenda for the past few years. Changing language and how something is “said” is everything with liberal progressives. Not only do they call the right for homosexuals to marry a “civil right” but they have conflated their “struggle” as morally equivalent to the REAL civil rights struggle of blacks in the 1960s. And can you tell me exactly WHEN homosexuals have not had equal protection under the laws in this country? If they are a citizen, they have equal protection. Have they been denied a right to a fair trial? Have they been denied rights to an attorney? Have they been denied the right to peacefully assemble? It is not a question of equal protection. Every person of age can marry one person of the opposite sex. Gays have exactly the same rights that I have. Gays want more than equal rights.

Apparently you need to familiarize yourself with the equal protection clause. Homosexuals are just as free to enter marriage with someone of the opposite sex as a heterosexual person. And heterosexual persons are not given special permission to enter a marriage with a person of the same gender.
The law is the same for everybody. You can argue that we should allow homosexual marriage; but the equal protection clause is not a legitimate point to that end.

This amendment is only for state government ie. As far as I can tell no one has been imprisoned or punished in any real way. They ARE completely free to express their opinions. As the network is completely free to let them go. If I’m at work and I say something that part of my customer base my be offended by…I will be terminated. The Benham brothers did not perform any act of discrimination. They didn’t refuse to provide services to homosexuals. They didn’t attempt to deprive any homosexual of their civil rights. They haven’t refused to associate with homosexuals. They aren’t forcing homosexuals to sit at the back of the bus, or attend separate schools, or attempted to deprive them of due process or the right to earn a living or hold public office.
Their only sin is not thinking the thoughts some folks think they should think. Their show has been dropped not for anything they’ve DONE, but for holding the “wrong” sort of personal opinions.
What you’re advocating is pure bigotry, intolerance and discrimination. You’re arguing that employers should have the right to hire or not hire an individual based not on that individual’s qualifications for the job, but for holding unwelcome opinions on subjects completely unrelated to the employment offered. Your United States government established the EEOC that makes it illegal to discriminate in hiring because of age, national origin, RELIGION, race, disability etc. It seems the brothers could easily file a discrimination suit against the network. The contractual aspect of marriage is sanctioned by the State. However, ‘marriage’ as it has been understood by human society for around 5,000 years, means the joining together of man and woman for the purposes of procreation, the upbringing of children in a stable environment, and mutual support of the spouses one for the other. Your libertarian (libertine?) interpretation may have currency today,but in the long run it will do grave injury to society, just as easy divorce and rampant illegitimacy are doing today.
Marriage predates organized religion and civil order. It is one of the few organic institutions for the human race. Evolution doesn’t care about your silly laws and your silly religion. Marriage was a religious institution LONG, LONG, LONG before any government got involved. And in the US at least, the government joined churches in recognizing marriage because it saw the protection of the institution as essential to the preservation of the nation.
It’s a total misrepresentation of marriage to pretend like the institution is somehow official because of what your government says.
I suspect most Christians in the US would say that you are married when you say your vows before God – whether or not you pay the government for a marriage license. If the government stops recognizing marriage at all (which is probably a good idea) marriage won’t disappear. It will just return to its original state which is probably the best possible outcome for everyone.
Actually marriage was first introduced in the bible. It is a religious ceremony in which governments took over. Being a Christian and having Christian beliefs does not mean that you hate the people you disagree with.

I have family members who are gay. I love them. They know I disagree with their choices but we still love each other and spend a lot of time together. They choose not to force their lifestyle choices on my family.

Marriage has nothing to do with religion, unless you so choose. Folks can get married by anyone with a license or justice of the peace. The act of marriage has been around long before organized religion.
You are sadly mistaken about marriage having nothing to do with religion. Long before the state/government was involved, people were married in churches, according to church law, church doctrine. Marriages were recorded in church records and family Bibles. Marriage is, in fact, an institution of the church. The rules of marriage or refusal to marry, varied according to the church you were a member of, e.g., Baptist, Mormon, Catholic. The state/government only became involved when someone decided that blood tests were necessary for the public health. Even then and even now, it is up to the church doctrine whether or not you will be allowed to be married in the church after you get a marriage license. The license does not marry you, just allows you to then choose when, where, how, and by whom and in which church or city hall or backyard or party venue you want to be married.
Marriage IS a religious thing. The state usurped the authority so they could tax marriage. The union of a man and a woman IS marriage. They agree to live together, share their worldly goods, begat their children all in the grace of God. It was government that turned it into a legal contract. For the legal contract you are required to pay a Notary Public or Justice of the Peace to certify the contract. That is NOT marriage.
So do you disagree that this nation was founded on Christian principles? Maybe you need to read the documents that the founding fathers wrote.

Leading a prayer rally is not “aggressive”, if that bothers you then you are quite insecure and ignorant of the world. A “civil union” with the same rights as a “married couple” answers the problem. However, neither side is ready to accept that solution and until both sides do, we will have conflict. According to EVERYTHING published prior to 1990, a marriage was between a MAN and a WOMAN the problem is semantics, marriage is and should be still the same and a civil union introduced for those of one sex that want to join in a deep relationship with a member of the same sex.

hgtv is making a commercial decision… they are not kowtowing to anyone or a “liberal agenda”. Just trying not to offend a target demographic and to keep the show about the substance. Plus, I doubt the brothers are the absolute best to teach the lesson of the show, but are to attract viewership.
As a larger point, this was a bad decision to bring social conservatives into the party of capitalism. We’re paying the price for the Nixon strategy. A real shame for the party of true libertarians and fiscal conservatives to have to cater to those that play cafeteria religion with the old and new testaments and point to the agendas of people that want equality as demonic.

If the gay community practiced the same tolerance toward Christians that it demands from Christians, the Benhams views wouldn’t even be an issue, especially on a show in which they’re unlikely to even come up. Personally, I have no problem watching a gardening show with a gay host, since his views on same-sex marriage are irrelevant to the show. A good gardening tip is a good gardening tip, whatever sexual orientation or political opinions the presenter might have.

Well, if we’re going to be completely truthful, it’s still unknown whether people are “born gay”. So, either side claiming to know the truth is just giving conjecture. Secondly, race and sexual orientation are NOT the same thing, nor are they equal. One cannot hide their race. Sexual orientation is nobody’s business and you won’t know until someone makes it a point to tell you. Race is worn on the outside. There’s no hiding it. When you look at someone, you know their race. It’s a MUCH harder life for people who are mistreated because of racism. That’s such an unfair comparison to make. It just shows people’s ignorance when they compare the civil rights movement and the mistreatment of blacks to being gay. The only way people know if you’re gay is if you make it their business. Gay is a preference. Nothing more. Gay behavior increases in places it is tolerated and decreases in places where it is not. It must rely on the coersion of the sexually confused in order to increase their numbers and gain mainstream status. If not promoted, history has shown gay populations are 2.5-5% of the general public. The American public generally doesn’t care about this issue, but doesn’t approve of openly gay behavior in public. The effort to jam acceptance down the throats of average Americans by Hollywood and bastions of the left is definitely not appreciated by the majority of Americans, regardless of ethnicity, race or religion.
So believing in traditional marriage as the standard is a form a racism? So civilization has been racist for a couple thousand years? So only in recent years we are so enlightened as to see the truth that dismantling traditional marriage will be better for society. If love is the only criteria for marriage, then one man should be able to marry two men right? Cause he loves them. If you look up what happened to some of the people who got new houses from shows like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, you will see that they end up owing ridiculous amounts of taxes and having other financial problems. At least some of them had to sale. Not all of these shows families had happy ever afters, but what did the networks care? They got their show and their viewers and their advertising dollars, so what if after the team pulled out it didn’t continue to be all fluffy-bunny and warm feelings?

HGTV made a business and not moral a decision. The hosts’ efforts to deny gays the rights they themselves enjoy would affect the show’s viewership to a point where the network couldn’t get ad revenue necessary to make it worth broadcasting. Everyone’s free to express his/her views on any subject. Not everyone has a right to a TV show, though. It’s economics, not fascism.

I had the good fortune of meeting the Benham Brothers and attending one of their training seminars on representing lenders in foreclosure cases. Although the business opportunity was unable to come to fruition it is my impression that they are an excellent example of what I pray and hope my sons to grow up to be.
They seem to be to be tough competitors… but kind, honest and extremely well-intentioned. They are unapologetically Christian, yet loving and kind towards everybody.
Have we really come to an age where we cannot disagree with anyone without risking being labeled as an intolerant or a bigot?
I cannot imagine any circumstance where they would not be bold in their declaration for Biblical morality.., nor where they would “hide” their beliefs. I stopped watching this channel, a/k/a Logo Jr., when they started featuring gay couples as just another couple looking for home improvement help, or searching for that perfect home near Castro St. Keep your gay agenda and your .1% of the population viewing audience. Idiots!
I emailed HGTV telling them I and my wife will not be watching HGTV anymore due to their blatant hatred for folks who support real marriage and life for innocent babies.

You see, Hollywood doesn’t care about civil rights. They care about making a profit. If they cared about ethical choices, they would be operating a different way, one that does not exemplify the Electronic Colonialism Theory.
My point is, they make the choices based on the social context. They probably made this choice because they knew that if word got out that they air a show that starred anti-gay activists, there would be a negative backlash, because acceptance of gay people is becoming more and more common. HGTV’s goal is to make money. If that means making gay-supporting people happy, then that’s what they’re going to do. Blame the people if you want, but all this “hollywood’s one way street” stuff is so stupid considering it has nothing to do with their beliefs.

In this modern age (which is where many of us live, rather than the dark ages…), human rights for *ALL* are considered inalienable. Being compassionate and tolerant is not just for those who believe in the same god you do, have your same skin tone, gender, age, nor fall in love with the same kind of person you do.
I don’t live anywhere near Hollywood, nor do I watch much media, so this has nothing to do with Hollywood. It has to do with common decency toward all of mankind. To declare a group of people as being “wrong” based on some contradictory book to which you cleave is your prerogative and first amendment right.

I will discontinue watching the channel… it is a fun watch with many of the great hosts doing a great job, but to think that a host that doesn’t toe the liberal line makes every other host doubtful in my mind.
My perspective is not allowed on this channel so my eyes will not watch it.

I think that we have to look and ask ourselves why would a network get rid of a show that would be helping others? For what they see as political correctness? These guys are about helping others yet you for some reason, do not see that. I am appalled that this can happen and how it is happening all over in our nation. As a democrat, it really makes me angry to see that these guys are not represented on HGTV. Wow, we are changing and not for the better.

Christians do not condemn the persons who agree with same sex relationships, rather they love the person and dislike the sin. Those who have the power to punish a persons beliefs in the hopes that it will change that person are mistaken. Be it Christian or other believes, punishment has never worked. I thought that the perfunctory statement that the views and statements of those involved does not represent the company beliefs would be sufficient. Guess not. Most of the people commenting on the dismissal of the Benham brothers, are missing the point of the HGTV network. HGTV is a network routed in diversity, gay, straight, Asian, African American, Caucasian, Native American, Middle Eastern, etc. All and more cultures are presented in a positive non political format. Having a show presented by brothers whose outspoken personal bigoted views, go against the positive multicultural diversity of HGTV. This should allow HGTV to decide if the network will carry a show with The Brothers as Hosts. There are other networks such as CBN, TBN, that share their narrow minded views and could possibly carry their show. HGTV is a culturally diverse network and I for one aplaude the network for their decision. A vote against bigotry!

No, it’s offensive to a key HGTV audience: gay men. It’s just bad business. If a known atheist or anti-Christian activist was hired to host a show on CBN or the like, would that make sense?
Then they need to put that into their contracts. The purpose of CBN is to produce Christian programming. The purpose of HGTV is to produce home improvement programming. If they want to add that all hosts must adhere to their position on homosexuality, fine–but tell them that up front. Or, change their name to LOGO.

Funny how HGTV (a private company)can decide to cancel a contract because they don’t agree with the brother’s personally held religious beliefs–beliefs that would not even be aired on the show and that’s OK. But other small private businesses can’t even decline doing work for someone for the same reason. It is always one sided. Everyone has the right to their opinion and beliefs and should not be forced to agree with someone else. If HGTV can chose who they work with, other businesses should be allowed to do the same. There is an important difference between a business that creates TV shows and a business that offers “public accommodations.” I think the market would deal effectively with many businesses that act on bigoted beliefs about sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, or sex. I don’t see that a small business offering to cater to wedding parties, or provide similar such services, should be required to offer their services to everyone. But public accommodations are another matter entirely. I don’t think we want to return to segregation–Jim Crow for homosexuals.
