Shine International Launching Branded On-Demand Channel
In a first for Shine International, the sales and distribution division of Shine Group is launching a branded on-demand streaming channel. Initially going out in the U.S. via Roku, the channel will offer more than 200 hours of multi-genre programming including The School, Got To Dance, The Magicians, Eternal Law and The Sandhamn Murders. Content is available for free with advertising, or can be rented ad-free.
‘Small Time Gangster’ Heads To Romania As ‘Umbre’
HBO Europe will start production next month in Romania on Umbre, a local version of Australian series Small Time Gangster. The eight-parter is set to air on HBO Romania in early 2015, Film News Europe reports. The dark comedy follows a taxi driver whose side job is working for a Bucharest mobster. After he accidentally kills someone, he can’t extricate himself from the mob. Igor Cobileanski (The Unsaved) is directing from a script by Bogdan Mirica. The original aired on SBS in 2013 and is distributed internationally by DRG Formats.
‘The Salvation’ Sells To Germany, Japan, Korea, Russia
Official Cannes Selection title The Salvation continues to rack up sales after IFC took American rights during the festival. Directed by Kristian Levring, the 1870s-set Western stars Mads Mikkelsen, Eva Green and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Sales also have closed in Germany and Austria (Concorde), Japan (Tohokushinsha), Korea (Cinema Republic) and Russia (Cinema Prestige). Sales outfit TrustNordisk says negotiations are ongoing in a large number of territories.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment Inks With Japan’s Imagica TV
ITV Studios Global Entertainment has signed a multi-year deal with Japanese satellite broadcaster Imagica TV. Under the agreement, the Imagica BS channel will air ITV Collection, a new ITV-branded programming block featuring 200 episodes of premium dramas including Mr Selfridge, Agatha Christie’s Poirot, and Brideshead Revisited. Imagica also will create an ITV Collection VOD service, with a wider selection of programming.
National Geographic Channels Journey Deeper Into France
National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild have dug further into France, both joining the Orange pay-TV platform. The channels now respectively reach more than 9 million and 8 million subscribers in the country. Distributed by Fox International Channels, National Geographic Channel is present in 171 countries. In the past year, it has increased viewership in France by 48%. Nat Geo Wild has grown 56% in the last year.
Elevation Pictures Taps Naveen Prasad As EVP & GM
Naveen Prasad has joined Canadian distributor Elevation Pictures as EVP and General Manager. A former SVP at Alliance Films, he will oversee distribution, sales, and operations across all media. “It is great to have Naveen join our team,” said Elevation Pictures Co-president Laurie May. “He brings invaluable skills, relationships and experience, and we are excited to have him play an integral role in growing the company.”
