EXCLUSIVE: High net worth individuals have become the life blood of Hollywood, and one to watch is Black Label Media’s Molly Smith. She’s the daughter of Federal Express’s Fred Smith, who backs Alcon. She also was a producer of The Blind Side, before launching the financing/producing shingle. Molly Smith hosted and backed the CAA party at the recent Sundance Film Festival, as well as an exclusive dinner to honor Julie Huntsinger and the Telluride Film Festival held in Park City. Smith has an emerging slate that includes (with Alcon) the Reese Witherspoon pic The Good Lie, Dallas Buyers Club helmer Jean Marc Valle’s next pic Demolition, the Denis Villeneuve-directed Sicario, and the Barry Switzer pic Bootlegger’s Boy. She runs Black Label with Trent and Thad Luckinbill.
Black Label Media is also building its brand another way, by empowering new writer voices. The label has hatched its first iteration of a Writer’s Lab, one that will be overseen by Jon Schumacher, who was just promoted to vice president of development, with Rachel Smith and Kathryn Foster to be co-directors of the BLM Writer’s lab. They start the program with a group of young emerging new writers who will develop original feature film ideas for Black Label Media.
