Protagonist Pictures is launching international sales at the EFM this week on Angus Macqueen and Guillermo Galdos’ feature documentary The Legend Of Shorty. The film world premieres at SXSW in the Documentary Spotlight section in March. Submarine is co-repping the film for North America with Protagonist. Produced by Simon Chinn (Searching For Sugar Man, Man On Wire) and Andrew Mackenzie-Betty (Thriller In Manila), the film focuses on ‘El Chapo’, aka Joaquin Guzman, the most powerful drugs lord in history – and one of the world’s most wanted men. The near mythical figure has evaded capture for over 10 years, and is alternately described as a brilliant business visionary, an amoral and ruthless murderer, a revolutionary hero and a latter-day Robin Hood. The Legend Of Shorty is produced by Red Box Films, Twofour and Ronachan Films, with funding from Film4, WGBH Frontline, Discovery Latin America and BFI.
Marking a big return as a UK buyer, Icon Film Distribution has added seven titles to its slate for 2014. Among them are Don Cheadle’s Kill The Trumpet Player about legendary jazz musician Miles Davis; Dan Stevens-starrer The Guest; Lynn Shelton’s Laggies with Keira Knightley, Chloë Grace Moretz and Sam Rockwell; Cold In July from Jim Mickle; Richard LaGravenese’s The Last Five Years; Next Goal Wins, the true story of the American Samoa football team; and Jennifer Kent’s Australian horror movie The Babadook.
Content will sell worldwide rights at the EFM to Paul Tanter’s He Who Dares: Downing Street Siege, the sequel to last year’s He Who Dares. Benedict Knight and Simon Phillips will reprise their roles from the original in the film that follows the aftermath of He Who Dares as Knight’s Christopher Lowe is summoned to 10 Downing Street, the home of the British Prime Minister, to be dishonorably discharged for disobeying a direct order, despite the fact that he saved the Prime Minister’s only daughter in the previous film. Russell Kilmister and Ryan Winsley also star. Phillips produces.
Paris-based Memento Films International has boarded international sales on documentary Energized. From the producers of More Than Honey, We Feed The World and Let’s Make Money, the film is directed by Hubert Canaval. It explores questions of energy production and consumption in today’s world and how the business is not about providing people with what they need, but about promoting systems that enable certain people to make a fortune, says Memento. Allegro Film is producing with MFI introducing Energized to buyers at the EFM. Thimfilm will release in Austria later this year.
Ahead of the EFM, K5 International has struck theatrical distribution deals in the UK (Icon), France (Bodega), Australia (Madman), Japan (Asmik) and the Middle East (Falcon) on documentary feature Next Goal Wins. Produced by Archer’s Mark and Agile Films, the movie is the true story of the American Samoan national soccer team as it attempts to break an unheard-of losing streak. Directors are Mike Brett and Steve Jamison and producer is Kristian Brodie.
