Tax incentives and rock ’n’ roll met at the Sundance Film Festival this morning and rock’n’roll won. Just 10 minutes into today’s the State to Slate panel at the festival’s Hub storefront offices on Main Street, the band The Wind & The Wave plugged in for a soundcheck next door at the Festival Music Café. The band are set to play the venue this afternoon. As many in the industry in production-lite California knows, there’s a lot to learn about what credits and incentives the 43 other states with such programs are offering but any hope of hearing almost anything any said in the room was lost except between breaks in the Wind & The Wave’s tunes. The 10 – 11 AM panel included producers from pics such as Ruddlerless, Komino The Treasure Hunter as well as film office representatives from New Mexico, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Texas. Ironically Rudderless is a drama about a rock’n’roll band. The Shameless star and Rudderless‘ director William H. Macy, who is in town for the world premiere of his feature helming debut, was one of the panelists today. “Everyone just talk louder into the mics,” requested moderator Joe Chianese of Entertainment Partners subsidiary Financial Solutions. Though Macy and all involved took his advice and loudly struggled on, they were still pretty much drowned out by the band from next door. “I was going to say ‘thank you’ to you all but now the music is over, I’m going to say ‘let’s do it all over again,’ ” joked Chianese at the end to laughter. While, today’s panel is scheduled to be shown online on Financial Solutions site on January 21. “The last 10 minutes of the panel didn’t have to compete with The Wind & The Wave from next door but Chianese told me he’s not sure yet if the panel will actually ever make online because of the obvious audio problem. “We’re going to have someone look at it and listen to it and see if it’ll work,” he said.
