China’s First Daily U.S. Talker? ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show
The Ellen DeGeneres Show has become the first U.S. daily talk show to be carried in China with the current 11th season now available on-demand via online video service provider Sohu Video. Episodes of the Warner Bros International Television Distribution property will be subtitled in Chinese and delivered within 48 hours of the original U.S. broadcast. Ellen is the top-rated daytime talk show in the U.S. with women 25-54. The talker seems well-suited to the Chinese audience with its brand of family-friendly humor and big stars. Starz’s ‘Power’ To Premiere At MIP-TV
Power, the Starz original series exec produced by Curtis Jackson (aka 50 Cent) will have its world premiere at this April’s Starz_logoMIP-TV market in Cannes. MIP-TV and sister market Mipcom have been increasingly drawing big-ticket premieres and talent to the Riviera in recent editions. In October, Mipcom hosted the world premiere of The Tunnel, the Franco-British adaptation of The Bridge. The eight-episode first season of Power was created by showrunner Courtney Kemp Agboh. Jackson also stars in the story of a wealthy New York City nightclub owner (Omari Hardwick) who caters to the city’s elite. He’s also living a double life as the kingpin of the most lucrative drug network in New York. His marriage, family and business all become unknowingly threatened as he is tempted to leave his criminal life behind and become the rags-to-riches businessman he has always dreamed. Mark Canton, Randall Emmett and David Knoller also serve as executive producers. The screening will be held April 7.

Starz Worldwide Distribution Inks With Russia’s Amedia
In other Starz news, Starz Worldwide Distribution and Russian TV producer/pay-TV broadcaster/and VOD service operator Amedia have entered a multiyear, multiplatform content licensing and distribution deal for current and future Starz original series. The deal also covers other movie and TV content that will be brought to audiences in Russia, Georgia, the CIS, and the Baltic States. Amedia will have exclusive pay-TV and SVOD rights to such series as The White Queen, Magic City, and Michael Bay’s Black Sails. It also covers future series including Power. Amedia plans to broadcast episodes of the original series the day after their respective U.S. premieres.

Boxatricks Signs First-Look Deal With Nordic World
British producers Colman Hutchinson and Steve Springford joined with Who Wants To Be A Millionaire creators Michael Whitehill and David Briggs to launch Boxatricks in September. The company has now boxatrickslogoentered a first-look deal with Nordic World, the sales alliance owned by broadcasters TV2 Norway and TV4 Sweden. Under the deal, Nordic World and its broadcast backers will have first Nordic-Worldright to all new formats created by Boxatricks. The agreement also includes co-developing formats to be produced and piloted by Nordic World’s broadcast partners. All formats will be distributed worldwide by Nordic World. The UK and the Nordics are two of the hottest spots for TV right now, and Nordic World will also act as a bridge between Boxatricks and its network of independent producers to match paper formats to producers with the appropriate expertise, and vice versa. Nordic World recently acquired Amsterdam-based format specialist Absolutely Independent as it continues to expand. Boxatricks is working to create formats in the game and quiz show space as well as factual entertainment programs.

‘Boonie Bears: To The Rescue’ Breaks Toon Records In China
Chinese 3D animated film Boonie Bears: To The Rescue set records for a domestic animated feature at the local box office last weekend. Baseddbxb003_002b_sc065 on the popular TV series, it grossed $16.69M in its opening three days, becoming the first Chinese animated film to reach the 100M yuan mark in the short period and beating a previous opening day record set by Pleasant Goat And Big Big Wolf, according to China.org. The results are impressive given Despicable Me 2‘s hot current run in China where it had an 11-day total of $33.5M and is the first movie of 2014 to cross 200M yuan.
