XLrator Media has acquired North American distribution rights to the sci-fi action thriller The Scribbler, directed by John Suits and written by Daniel Schaffer, who wrote and illustrated the 2006 graphic novel on which the film is based. Arrow‘s Katie Cassidy stars as Suki, a woman confronting her destructive mental illness using “The Siamese Burn,” an experimental machine designed to eliminate multiple personalities. The closer Suki comes to being “cured,” though, she’s haunted by a thought: What if the last unwanted identity turns out to be her? Michelle Trachtenberg, Eliza Dushku, Gina Gershon, Sasha Grey, Garret Dillahunt, Michael Imperiol and Billy Campbell co-star, and a fall 2014 release is planned. New Artists Alliance’s Gabriel Cowan Ken F. Levin of NightSky Productions produced, and Kerry Johnson as well as Dallas Sonnier and Jack Heller of Caliber Media executive produce — the pic is the first of four films in a co-production deal between NAA and Caliber. The deal was negotiated by XLrator CEO Barry Gordon and Mike Radiloff and Traction Media on behalf of the filmmakers.
Kino Lorber has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to the documentary The New Public by Jyllian Gunther. The docu, which premiered at the 2012 Hamptons Film Festival, shows the challenges facing teachers working with students who are struggling to perform under adverse conditions. The plan is to release the pic immediately to the educational market via its Kino Lorber Edu division, and for Kino Lorber to partner with Gathr to offer the film for on-demand community screenings. The film will also air December 31 on the PBS World Channel, followed by a digital and home video release sometime next year.
