EXCLUSIVE: Kristen Schaal and Rich Blomquist have teamed with film and TV writers-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street) for American Monster, a comedy, which has sold to ABC. The project, about a small-town misfit who becomes an unlikely celebrity when she goes on trial for the murder of the century, is intended as a starring vehicle for comedian and Daily Show contributor Schaal, who will write the script with her husband, former Daily Show writer Blomquist. The two executive produce with Lord and Miller and their president of television, Seth Cohen, for 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Lord Miller.
This is the third sale for Lord Miller in the company’s first season under the exclusive three-year deal it inked with 20th TV in May. It also has two comedies at Fox, The Last Man On Earth from Will Forte, which has a pilot production commitment, and Torched from writer Chris Romano, which has a put pilot commitment. Lord and Miller, who directed the pilot for Fox’s freshman comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, are with UTA and Ziffren Brittenham. Schaal is repped by UTA, Avalon Management and Jeff Endlich; Blomquist is with UTA.
