Broadchurch’ Gets Book Treatment
Little, Brown has acquired world rights to a novel inspired by ITV crime series Broadchurch. According to Bookseller, Sphere Fiction’s Jade Chandler bought the book from Cathy King at the UK’s Independent Talent, representing Broadchurch screenwriter Chris Chibnall. He’ll co-write the novel with thriller author Erin Kelly. To be published next August, it will add material to the existing story and delve deeper into the back stories of the characters. Broadchurch, starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman, was a massive hit for ITV this year in the UK. It also aired on BBC America and is being remade by Fox with Tennant playing an American detective brought to a small town where a young boy has been killed under mysterious circumstances.

‘The Escape Artist’ Sells In Scandinavia
In related David Tennant news, Norway’s TV2 and TV4 in Sweden have taken rights to Red Arrow International’s three-part drama The Escape Artist. Tennant stars in the thriller that debuts on BBC One tonight. David Wolstencroft wrote the series that’s produced by Hilary Bevan Jones and Paul Frift of Red Arrow’s Endor Productions. Tennant plays defense lawyer Will Burton who specializes in getting people out of tight legal corners. But when his talents acquit the prime suspect in a horrific murder trial, the tables turn. I saw the debut episode last week in London and, without giving away any spoilers, I will say it packs a wallop.

Bassem Youssef, Egypt’s Answer To Jon Stewart, Investigated, Again
Bassem Youssef is reportedly in trouble again with the Egyptian authorities. The talk show host known as the ‘Jon Stewart of the Arab World’ kicked off a new season of his popular news mag, The Program, on Friday night. It was the first time he has hosted the show since Islamist president Mohamed Morsi was ousted. According to Reuters, citing a report by the Al-Ahram newspaper, a viewer complained that jokes Youssef made on the show about the new government had harmed the public interest and risked creating chaos in the country. An equal-opportunity offender, Youssef was arrested in April on accusations he had insulted Morsi and the Islamic faith. Those charges were ultimately dropped.

Festival Pics & A Comedy On Louis Delluc Shortlist
The prestigious Louis Delluc Prize – one of France’s highest honors – has unveiled its shortlist. The eight-strong field is a who’s who of this year’s festival titles, along with one hit box office comedy. Controversial Palme d’Or winner Blue Is The Warmest Color is there as is the also controversial Stranger By The Lake, the Cannes title that brought Alain Guiraudie the Un Certain Regard directing prize. Also up are Asghar Farhadi’s Iranian Oscar entry The Past; Arnaud Desplechin’s Cannes pic Jimmy P. with Benicio del Toro; Berlin titles Camille Claudel 1915 by Bruno Dumont and Emmanuelle Bercot’s Elle S’En Va starring Catherine Deneuve; and San Sebastian premiere Mon Ame Par Toi Guérie by François Dupeyron. Comedy 9 Mois Ferme from Albert Dupontel is something of a wild card as the Delluc usually honors more serious fare. It opened at No. 2 at the French box office last week just behind Turbo. Cannes Festival president Gilles Jacob presides over the jury for the Delluc which was first awarded in 1937. Winners will be announced in December.
