HBO has set end date for True Blood, announcing today that the series’ upcoming seventh season next summer will be its last. The veteran vampire drama, created by Alan Ball based on Charlaine Harris’ books, was recently renewed for a 10-episode seventh season. “True Blood has been nothing short of a defining show for HBO,” said HBO’s president of programming Michael Lombardo. “Together with its legions of fans, it will be hard to say goodbye to the residents of Bon Temps, but I look forward to what promises to be a fantastic final chapter of this incredible show.” True Blood, starring Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, had been HBO’s flagship drama until this year when it was eclipsed by the red-hot Game Of Thrones. It still is a potent draw, logging 4.5 million viewers for its sixth-season premiere this summer and averaging gross audience of 10.6 million viewers per episode. True Blood also successfully navigated the transition from Ball to new showrunner Brian Buckner who took over the show early into Season 6. All key cast members, including stars Paquin, Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard, are on board for the series’ final chapter.

It’s about time. True Blood should have ended 4 seasons ago.
The ratings say otherwise.
Ratings don’t equate with quality – they are usually mutually exclusive (or reality TV would no longer air)
boardwalk empire should be next. And true detective is not hbo shows. more cbs show.
If HBO can premiere westworld, open and leftovers all in 2014 will be great. HBO still the best.
must be a typo. you surely meant 6.
Probably not, as I doubt he’s stupid.
probably not, seeing as i was jokingly insinuating that the show should never have been made. someone would’ve already posted what you are saying, but since they didn’t, I doubt they’re stupid.
Thank god. It is really time for this to go. And maybe having to wrap up will give the series some momentum and purpose again.
This program was still on?
this is a major mistake. True Blood is my favorite show on HBO and the best thing in many years. No reason this should not continue, unless they are planning a feature film, and even then I say please do not end this series.
Sad news. I LOVE the show. I just wish I could erase the awful last season from my memory, though.
No , It Shouldn’t End
I knew that after the Twilight saga ended, the entire subgenre (both in film and television) would start to come to a close. I’m more curious now to see if NBC’s Dracula can survive an entire season or more.
It’s not like Twilight ended and everyone suddenly lost interest in shows like True Blood. This season’s ratings were still great. The Vampire Diaries is still The CW’s highest-rated show. A new Dracula film is slated for theatres in August of 2014. You seem to be over-exaggerating; the decision to end True Blood has little to do with waning popularity, because it still is popular and well-watched.
Yeah they lost interests well before Twilight ended.
I guess it’s become too pricey for HBO after 6 seasons. Or execs decided it’s too long in the tooth, despite good ratings. Surely every show had to eventually end it’s run, but maybe HBO can develop some spin-off ? Summer is for Suki !
Hahahaha. “…long in the tooth!”
Thank God. I’m exhausted by all that nonsense that writers create every season. Every character became lame, writers don’t know what to do with characters like Lafayette, Sam an that stupid Alcide. So they create for them some ridiculous stories that make no sense and are boring as hell. Anna Paquin was sleep walking entire last season. I think even Pam lost her sparkle. True Blood was amazing at first. But it should end.
Called it.
Not a terrible idea. The writers really seem to be stretching for interesting story lines this season and last. In part, they’ve limited themselves by deviating so far from the source material. Hopefully this means a quick end to the zombie vampire plot so they can have a proper ending. Ten episodes isn’t a lot of time.
Very sad love this show read all the books just finished the final book in the series I think if they would’ve stayed closer to the books it could’ve had a longer run
HBO still has Game of thrones and now they buy Westworld! But yea they need more hits.
This show is still getting huge ratings. Even though the costs probably went up for the next season, I still don’t get why they’d end it.
Probably because it has been universally awful and an embarrassment to HBO’s seal of quality for the last several seasons.
Except seasons 4 and 5 were very fun, so no.
TB jumped the were-shark pints ago…
The fairies killed it.
Shame…
i own all the books and all the series when they come out, while i didnt care for season 5. the rest were good. this show has a lot to offer still. give it back to alan ball. when he was in charge the show was exellent. i wanted to see quinn , but i guess that mightve been a bit expensive.a lot of ppl, incl. me, will be canceling thier hbo subscription if this is truly the end for true blood. im very disappointed with hbo decision.
A spinoff with Eric Northman and Pam rebuilding Fangtasia with Eric still the area 9 sherrif would be great.
I don’t understand why they’re cancelling a show that’s well done and always anticipated each summer. There are still so many stories to tell with the characters. I’m hoping one of the other cable channels will pick up the show before the ending begins. Once the last show airs on HBO, I will cancel my HBO subscription. True Blood is the only reason I even have HBO.
I wish they would keep the show going. It is meant for entertainment not for emmys. This show does a good job of entertaining fans no none of it is real but 99percent of everything on TV is not real. Just keep it going the ratings are still great!!!
Wow a helluva announcement on free HBO weekend! This is disappointing to here. I think they’re still a lot of life left in the show. So many other shows out there run forever like friends, big bang theory and the 25 different CSI’s continue to just keep running and draw viewers. And those are local stations that you don’t pay extra for. All I’m saying is if they can still think of ideas to keep it interesting then just keep it going. Working for a cable provider, a lot of people I come into contact with tell me its the only reason they have HBO. I guess next we’ll here that Starz will be dropping they’re best program Spartacus. Uh wait they already did. At least they have a back up plan with a spin-off.
I love True Blood, this news is so sad
I guess ill be canceling my HBO after the season 7 finale.. reruns of crappy movies over and over gets old.. True Blood was the only reason we kept it..SO long HBO now you SUCK.. everyone I know even my bank president is a True Blood fanatic.. bad decsion. HBO
I think it is truely a big mistake. HBO just does not have that much to offer. No, not all seasons were the best, but I knew that the next one would be. It was just enough to keep you going. I really am disappointed that it will no longer be on. What does HBO have in mind to replace True Blood with that would be along the same basis.(Vampire) You should really re think this guys and get Alan Ball back.
