The Five Easy Pieces Oscar nominee also known for such films Nashville and Alfred Hitchcock’s final pic Family Plot has died at 74. Karen Black recently had turned to crowdfunding to help with her long battle against cancer. Her husband, Stephen Eckelberry, confirmed Black’s death in a Facebook post: “It is with great sadness that I have to report that my wife and best friend, Karen Black has just passed away, only a few minutes ago,” he wrote. “Thank you all for all your prayers and love, they meant so much to her as they did to me.”
Black began her acting career in Off-Broadway shows before starring in three short-lived Main Stem productions from 1965-67. She also appeared in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1966 romantic dramedy You’re a Big Boy Now. Several late-’60s TV guest roles on such shows as The Big Valley and Adam-12 led to her casting in the 1969 counterculture classic Easy Rider. A year later she and Jack Nicholson, who’d also appeared in Easy Rider, landed their breakout roles in Five Easy Pieces. Black earned a supporting actress Oscar nom and won the Golden Globe and NBR Award. She would add a second Globe four years later for The Great Gatsby. Black starred in films throughout the ’70s, including Airport 1975, The Day of the Locust, Robert Altman’s Nashville, Family Plot and Burnt Offerings. In 1975 she also starred in the cult-classic ABC telepic Trilogy of Terror, playing four roles in the three segments. She continued to work in TV, film and theater for the rest of her life, even after being diagnosed with cancer. In March, she stated a GoFundMe page in the hope of raising $17,000 for a two-month treatment in Europe. She brought in more than double that amount in a single day and ultimately ended up raising more than $61,000. Last night, Eckelberry posted on the site, “The kind people at the Motion Picture Television Fund helped place her in a nursing facility, where she is now. The cancer is still spreading slowly and it takes its toll.”

A big loss. I’ll never forget her smashing performance in “Five Easy Pieces.”
there’s something about that performance that’s just so interesting. hard to pinpoint exactly what it was but so so memorable
I had the privilege of meeting Karen Black on the set of one of her final movies.
She was a lovely person and I was a big fan of her contribution to the arts.
My thoughts are with her family. May she rest in peace.
i loved her . so sad. i was so fortune to hang out with her on the set of ‘Firecracker’ she was so wonderful.
tragic day
godspeed my dear
Goodbye Karen, you were great :(
I just returned from a meeting to find this notice in my Inbox and, immediately, I began to tear up.
Karen Black was one of my favorite actressses. I “discovered” her when I saw “Airport 1975” as a child. Then, she scared the bejeezus out of me in “Trilogy of Terror”. And when she co-starred with my favorite actress of all time, Bette Davis, in “Burnt Offerings”, I was forever lost. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen “Burnt Offerings” – just for her final onscreen moment alone.
Of course, I caught up with most of her more celebrated movies later in life.
Of all the celebrity passings that I have read about over the past few years, Karen Black is the only one over whom I have shed tears.
I will always love you, Miss Black.
R.I.P.
Oh this makes me so sad….:(
We shall miss you,Mrs.Black. You were a great actress.RIP.
Aloha Karen,I’ll never forget you in Trilogy of Terror. Amazing work!
Trilogy of Terror! Airport ‘ 75! Many memories, thanks and R.I.P., Karen.
RIP…I’ll never forget her being terrorized in her apartment by The Zuni Fetish Doll. Awesome film.
Totally agree. This segment scaried the heck out of me. To this day, can’t deal with small dolls.
Dont you hate when something so beautiful has to leave us :; ( rip you will be missed !!!!
Of Karen Black’s work, what
I easily remember most was
something she did back in the
1970s.
ABC aired a movie which was
actually a compilation of three
short stories, the entire production
entitled: “Trilogy of Terror”.
I can’t recall the title of Karen’s,
but her character arrived home from
Africa with this foot-tall figure of a
tribal warrior or some such thing.
It’s label included a warning, which
naturally, she ignored. Well, the thing
came to life, chasing her around her
apartment, emerging from the bathtub
dripping and with a knife in its mouth.
That image was hilarious.
Anyway, her mother came to visit
only to find that Karen had become
possessed by the spirit of the doll.
The final scene showed Karen in
wait, squatting like a MLB catcher,
and weilding a huge knife.
Wicked grin on her face.
As kids, we loved it.
And I will forever be thankful to
Karen for such a great experience
as a kid.
May Heaven hold her close.

That was a great TV movie. She was actually the star of all three segments.
Trilogy Of Terror was my favorite with Mage in The Great Gatsby second.
Very sad to hear it. Her roles in “Easy Rider” and “Five Easy Pieces” are unforgettable and will always stay in my memory. One of the greatest Anerican 60’s/70’s actresses! Fly high!
IMO, her best performance was in Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. RIP
I’m glad someone finally mentioned this! The ending of that play still gives me chills.
“Trilogy of Terror” is still one of the scariest movies ever. R.I.P. Karen Black. Gone but not forgotten.
I saw Karen Black in a play just a short while ago in Hollywood. She was terrific in her role. A true star — she will be missed. RIP
The Academy’s biggest snub was Karen in “The Day Of The Locust”, an absolutely amazing performance. RIP talented Lady.
I was so shocked to hear about the passing of Karen Black. I will miss her but still will see her in the movies, such a great loss. my prayers go out to her family.
Mother firefly you were my favorite devils reject !! Sad sad sad day rip wonderful Mrs Black
she was great as mama Firefly.. RIP Karen Black
the Pyx a Canadian mystery from the 70’s is some of her greatest work. she also composed and sang the soundtrack songs. also Red Dirt a 90’s film where she played a faded southern belle a afraid to leave her mansion.
I worked on “The Pyx” in 1972, featuring a very young Christopher Plummer along with Karen Black. She was a treat to work with and a wonderful talent, a gem of a human being. I’ll miss her.
I am proud to have both of those films in my DVD collection.
I know we all got this deep, sinking feeling when we heard about Karen’s passing. That just shows how deeply she touched all of our lives over the years. She was a great actress. Very memorable in whatever she accomplished. Her endeavors in later years showed she was a truly great person, too, inside. She will be missed.
And what about the horror movies by Rob Zombie? She played a great villain in ‘Devil’s Reject’s’ too. WONDERFUL actress, and gone too soon.
She was firefly in house of 1000– Easterbrook was mother is devil’s. she wanted tooth money for the sequel and rob douched her. She’s in heaven. He’ll be in hell for his demon greedy selfish ways. See you there Rob Cummings. I just wished we loved in a world where someone that gave these great performances didn’t have to plead from their death bed on a crowd funding site… That’s just terrible where is SAG health care????
Awesome woman, great actress. RIP…
Thank you for this kind post. Karen was my mother in law and a very extraordinary woman. It’s touching to hear of your love for her. Thank you.
I went to elementary school with Hunter for a couple years. Very sorry for your loss.
Thanks for all the great entertainment, Karen. You are beautiful, rest in peace.
