“I thought it would be fun to play her,” says Jane Fonda of her turn as Nancy Reagan in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, glimpsed in a new clip from the Weinstein Co. pic. The casting sparked plenty of controversy last year when it was first announced. But “I happen to know that she’s not unhappy that I’m playing her,” says Fonda. Check it out:

Her tee shirt isn’t passive agressive AT ALL.
(love her tho)
I would not pay a dime to see her play Reagan as a Vietnam Vet the wounds still go deep, I just wounder how many mothers sons and daughters are on the wall in DC. Reagan happy about play her is because see knows that hardly anyone will go see it.
Get over it
You strike me as someone who glibly writes, “Get over it,” to a Vietnam veteran, but if your iPhone got stolen, you’d be outraged at the injustice in the world. Get over YOURSELF.
(And not one swear word in the final edit, Deadline Hollywood Monitor!)
It is a travesty to put this traitor in a film. I think the movie will be a great one but I will not see it. I was a Navy Corpsman waiting to be sent to Vietnam while she was cavorting with the NVA. Some things are not forgivableble.
This is unforgivable show your disdain and save your money. It has to end somewhere the box office payday is a good way to end it.
Very very strange cut to the shot of her laughing at the end. Never would have made that decision. Would also have much rather watched the clip versus having the interview attached which kind of felt desperate. Just let us see how great she is as Nancy and leave it at that!
Let’s NOT see how good she is, and leave it at that. She’s one more reason I won’t go see it.
Poor casting. I love Jane Fonda, but she has never been a character actress. She has always played variations of her own tightly wounded self. This looks woeful.
Poor casting, indeed! She was chosen not for her character acting ability, but simply to tweak the Right. Mission accomplished.
I can’t imagine Nancy Reagan clasping her hands and grinning with joy while sitting at an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot down U.S. planes and pilots.
Whoever Jane Fonda plays, that is the way I always indelibly see her.
HAHAHAHAHA!
Knowing & enjoying conservatives barf a kidney @ her casting is worth the price of admission!
Girl I laugh myself at this! To see a communist play like a real life American? Dang….I wanna see this to!
Great reply!
You’ve got to have a tough hide to be a conservative in this country these days. None of this kind of casting surprises us any more. Were just waiting for you all to realize that liberalism leads to Detroit and Jane Fonda is a traitor for her visit to Vietnam during a war. As for us and Jane, life goes on. The ongoing real problem is Obama, the democrats and people like you who vote and agree with them.
Well said!!!
Another movie that I wont’ see. And Hollywood wonders why so many skip the theaters.
wait till all the idiot Marxists are living in a 1 BR eating govt cheese w/ no cell phone or car
Agreed! This thread alone is a laugh riot.
HAHAHAHA! And we’ll laugh when it flops like “Iron Lady.”
Is that why Meryl Streep won an Oscar? Why it made $107M on a $13M budget?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Squeal, piggee, SQUEAL!!!!
Hmmmm.rip off. The only reason to hire Fonda to play Reagan is the annoying & disbelief value. The script has no merits, the storyline is weak water, …….Predict a total box office flop.
Not at all. I’m a Conservative and I consider Ms Fonda one of the greatest actresses Hollywood has produced. I’m counting on the actress staying true to her “art” and not working from political bias. I don’t think she’ll let America down.
I consider Ms Fonda one of the greatest actresses Hollywood has produced.
That comment alone makes one suspect your intelligence
It’s totally insane to have Hanoi Jane playin’ the wife o’ the Gipper. Bet ol’ Ronnie is a rollin’ in his grave.
I have a feeling the studio and her supports (whomever they may be) will be busting a kidney as this turkey bombs. Let’s just say I’m glad none of my money is invested in this sure loser.
Being a Viet Nam Vet I will never see any movie she is in and think she is a traitor to this nation. I cannot believe Nancy Reagan in her younger years would of been happy with this choice. The movi will not be worth going to or the price of admission.
Love how much this casting pisses off the neo-cons. Wish they could have got Alec Baldwin to play Reagan.
It would have just been another reason to ignore this project. Nothing more.
wait till it dies at the box office. That’l teach them.
Baldwin would be more believable as Nancy…………….
This is moronic. Another reason why Hollywood is filled with people who lack any common sense. This movie will NEVER make any money. No fans of Reagan will ever go see this. IT is an obvious liberal smut piece. It really perplexes me why Hollywood green lights projects like this, especially when several blockbusters have lost money. Hollywood wonder why so many studios lose money and why America does not go to the movies like they used to
It’s called Oprah’s money$$$$ I haven’t and probably won’t see it but she and Forest Whitaker have a right to tell their story about how badly the blacks in the White House were treated – poor things…
“neo-con,” the left’s favorite word.
“Neo-cons”…such a childish name and comment. I’ll not watch because Fonda isn’t very good, unless you like seeing her schtick one more time. However, if your premise is true, and I’m sure it could be, then if I were an investor at any level I’d have to like throwing my money away. Why make a film that will garner only half of the potential viewing audience? I don’t understand the business end of this logic. At some point in time, you have to get over your us vs. them mentality.
I’d hardly know about this movie if Warner Bros. wasn’t such d**ks. But it looks pretty good and, to my surprise, now I want to see it.
LOL. Who’s the Casting Director & execs responsible for this? Jane Fonda, the Un-American who we famously saw posing with her (USA’s then-enemy) Vietnam gunner buddies as Regan’s wife. What a joke!
I wonder why they put that moment at the end of jane cracking up laughing and someone with an iPhone saying, “that’s hot!”
Weird.
Well………….what a shame!!!!
Such poor casting we’ll never know if it flops because of Fonda offending half the country (the half that likes the country) or because they just can’t make movies anymore.
Good choice if your goal is to prevent 50% of the country from seeing your movie.
Meh. It’ll tank just like The Iron Lady. You can’t play someone well if you can’t identify with them. That’s the antithesis of method acting.
All of the juveniles on this forum that relish an anti American dishonest zealot like Jane Fonda playing half of one of the most America-loving patriotic Presidential couples of the last century is so sad….. so very pathetic. And please continue to find amusement in our reaction… as we continue to not go to see films that disrespect our views and our country and these films that choose to insult and alienate about half the country before they even debut continue to pretty much have a 100% track record of BOMBINGf at the box office. So enjoy yourselves today – truly.
BRAVO, CHAP, well said
Very well said.
“half of one of the most America-loving patriotic Presidential couples of the last century”
Please! Don’t make me laugh. It’s nothing but delusion and political bias that makes anyone think Reagan was good for this country or good for the average American. Patriotic couple? Role playing does not make you a patriot. My father who bravely served this country from 1940 until his retirement decades later could always see through the phonies like Nixon and Reagan.
Fonda’s visit to Hanoi was a terrible mistake, which I understand she regrets deeply. That being said I have enjoyed her film work over the years ( “They Shoot Horse Don’t They” and “Klute” ” are especially good in my opinion, and I look forward to seeing “The Butler “. Not that it matters but I am a veteran of the the Vietnam era myself and believe that the politicians and military leaders who led us into the misguided action are the real villains.
She regrets it so much she is wearing a T-Shirt with her booking photo from her says of treason during the interview. She is a sick person who should be just getting out of prison, not making movies.
Hey Don,
You are a hero. Don’t believe the crap the likes of Fonda have been feeding you guys all these years. Vietnam was a noble cause. History should teach you that.
I especially liked her in Barbarella. Maybe she will do a flashback to her free-fall scene. That will ensure it to be a box office hit.
Especially the piano orgasm, eh? Yeah real class movie, and class actress, eh?
Im sure this movie will be just as successful as all of their current summer block busters! ;)
She was cast so there would be no doubt that the movie was intended as a stick-in-the eye to the republicans. It’s nothing more or less than that. I don’t see why people are getting all excited about it.
All the clips I’ve seen so far portray Nancy Reagan darker, harsher, and less “political glam” than she actually was. Everything in a movie is a choice and so I’m curious of their intent. Perhaps to portray her image more substantive? Serious? Sinister? Or was it the same as casting – superficial spite… to “de-glam” the first lady who strove more than most to exude it?
Hollywood could easily go to town on Hillary, lot of fodder there. But, of course they won’t.
Note to producers: if your goal in making this movie was to make money, you alienated half your potential audience by casting Fonda. Shirley Jones would have been a much better choice.
Jane honey, why don’t you go back to making exercise videos or Monster In-law? Your father, brother and your son, Troy, even were/are MUCH better actors than you and you’ve become such a pastiche of yourself that you’re now putting thoughtful film enthusiasts to sleep.
Wow, way to guarantee this movie will fail lol
Give JF her props. She’s first-rate as an actor. Looks like Nancy Reagan to me.
I don’t care about Jane’s politics one way or the other but I do think this is odd casting. I believe Nancy Reagan was 59 when her husband was elected president. Fonda is 75. While she looks pretty good she is way old for the role..
I might have gone to watch this movie as I respect the Reagan’s a great deal, but now I’ll just have to pass. Not with JF playing a role that she could never aspire to. I do not respect her enough to go see it. Sorry Hollywood, you loose.
I’m sure it will be a blockbuster if you and your friend see it.
This conservative loves this. It once again exemplifies Hollywood’s agenda, and strengthens our case of a sycophantic media. Classic cut of your nose to spite your face. They so incredibly stupid.
Someone did an absolutely horrible job in casting this movie. Jane Fonda is a disgrace
