EXCLUSIVE: Multi-platform geek content creator Nerdist Industries is diving into the distribution business with Tribeca Film. The companies have partnered to co-release SXSW winner Zero Charisma, the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired indie dramedy about an RPG Game Master (Sam Eidson) whose grasp on his life and his weekly gaming group starts to slip when a “neo-nerd” (Garrett Graham) starts taking over the game. Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews made their directorial debut with the film which also stars Brock England and is written by Matthews.

Nerdist, the genre and pop culture specialist behind Nerdist.com, the Chris Hardwick-hosted Nerdist Podcast, and its own eponymous YouTube channel and BBC America show, made the announcement today at Comic-Con. The Shark Films and Magic Stone production will debut October 8 on VOD, iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly, VUDU, Playstation, and Google Play followed by an October 11 theatrical run.

Zero Charisma is the first film acquisition for Nerdist, and landed on the company’s radar after its SXSW world premiere. “My podcast mate Jonah Ray saw Zero Charisma at SXSW and immediately texted me to say it was one of the best movies of the year,” explained Nerdist founder/CEO Hardwick in a statement. “When I saw it, I knew I had to tell as many people as I could about it. It’s hilarious, touching, beautiful, authentic and an eerily accurate echo of my first D&D group in the 80’s. I think the character of Scott will become a cultural hero. He is the personification of the nerd rage that boils in all of us when PEOPLE. DON’T. FOLLOW. THE. RULES. OF. THE GAME.”

Thomas Fernandes, Ezra Venetos, Andrew Matthews and Katie Graham produced the pic. Michael and Lindsay Stephenson (American Scream) of Magic Stone exec produced alongside Rod Olson, and Shark Films. Nerdist’s Peter Levin, Tribeca Film’s Jon Patricof, and Alison Diviney negotiated the deal with the filmmakers.
