EXCLUSIVE: As The Hunger Games moves into the final two movies culled from the Suzanne Collins novel Mockingjay, I’ve heard that Lionsgate and director Francis Lawrence are eyeing Julianne Moore to play the role of President Alma Coin. She is the manipulative politician who figures brightly in the finale as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) becomes a symbol of rebellion against the autocratic Capitol government. This is likely to happen quickly, and Moore would star in both of the final films, which brings back Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth and the returning cast along with Philip Seymour Hoffman, who will be making his first appearance in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which the studio is planning to bring to San Diego Comic-Con in July. Color Force’s Nina Jacobson is producing the series.
This comes at a time when Moore has a lot of good stuff going. The actress, who’s coming off her Emmy-winning portrayal of Sarah Palin in HBO’s Game Change; plays the twisted mom in the Kim Peirce-directed Carrie remake; stars opposite Jeff Bridges in Seventh Son for Warner Bros; and opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson in Don Jon, which Gordon-Levitt wrote and directed. I saw the latter film in Sundance, and there is a strong performance by Moore, on the order of The Kids Are All Rright. She’s repped by CAA and Management 360.

Not at all who I imagined, but Moore is a strong actress and might well be able to pull off a role that seems to go pretty much against her type.
I have always believed that Alma Coin was directly inspired by Michelle Forbes’ amazing performance as Admiral Helena Cain on Battlestar Galactica (note the name similarity and certain characteristics both leaders share). Therefore, I would have been amazed to see Michelle Forbes cast.
Hadn’t really thought of Michelle Forbes for Coin, but I think you’re onto something there.
I always imagined Allison Taylor, but I guess that watching 24 helped embed her image into my brain. I did read this book when I was watching the series.
I can see this and think Moore would do well. However, I always imagined Coin to be more like Sigourney Weaver, myself. Jodie Foster would also be good.
She should use her Boston accent from “30 Rock” and never explain it.
That would be amazing.
I’ve been a fan of Julianne Moore’s ever since she played Marlene in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle but I have to say it’s been a long time since she did anything that reminded me that she’s a good actress. Everything she’s done in the past few years have been either blatant money jobs (like this and the Carrie remake) or pretentious bores. The woman needs some new representation. Or move out of NYC and go live somewhere cheaper so she can afford to do good work again.
She was brilliant in A Single Man, Blindness, and Game Change, and pretty good in the Best-Picture-nominee The Kids Are All Right.
It’s true that it’s not quite comparable to her amazing run 1998-2002, but she is going to do David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars, which sounds exciting.
You obviously haven’t seen WHAT MAISIE KNEW – Moore is fabulous in it. And the film’s not a bore at all — it’s one of the best of the year and her rock star narcissistic mom character is great.
And I guess you missed her award winning performance in GAME CHANGE playing Sarah Palin.
And I guess you also missed THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT (2010), which again, was great, award winning, and not a bore at all, nor I bet did she get paid a lot (up front at least).
No I don’t work for her, I’m just a fan who hates pretentious critics who don’t know what the hell they are talking about.
Wow. Considering how upset you get over an innocuous online comment about some actress you’ve never met and never will, I’d hate to see how you’d react to someone actually doing something to you like steal your car (or man).
Don’t forget she is to be in David Cronenberg’s “Maps to the Stars” with John Cusack and Robert Pattinson, which starts filming this summer. I’m a big Cronenberg and Moore appreciator…
Wonderful news!…very pleased with this casting because Moore is not only a wonderful actress, but exactly who I pictured when reading the book.
I think she would be amazing in this role, I really hope its true!
Yeah. She would do great. I like that Actors join big budget movies. Like Winslet and Moor and Hoffman. Talents need money too.
Additionally to “Carrie”, “Seventh Son” and “Don Jon”, she is now in theatres with the acclaimed “What Maisie Knew”, has the the big-budget Liam Neeson thriller “Non-Stop” coming out in February and, best of all, will be in David Cronenberg’s new movie “Maps to the Stars”.
That was bitchy
It needs to be Sigourney Weaver!!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
It should be Judi Dench to play Alma Coin! :( :( :(
That’s the only person I could imagine playing Coin in all of this.
The only thing disappointing to me the actress has been a bit too busy and overexposed the last few years. Although a brilliant performer, I would have preferred a more striking name for Coin.
Julianne Moore as Alma Coin = AWESOME!. Damn, this cast is fantastic!.
I’m a fan of Julianne Moore but I don’t see her in this broke. I have and will always picture Sigourney Weaver as Coin.
Gillian Anderson should be coin
Should have been Judy Dench. Coin is supposed to be Snows contemporary. Moore is nearly 20 years too young. Disappointed.
