Related: ‘The Newsroom’: Aaron Sorkin & Cast Tip Season 2
Well, a new trailer for the upcoming second season of HBO’s The Newsroom certainly got a reaction on Fox News Channel. The cable news network’s The Five lambasted the Aaron Sorkin show today as a “liberal fantasy.” While admitting that he liked The Social Network pic that Sorkin wrote, co-host Greg Gutfeld went after Newsroom for how he saw its depiction of the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street movement. “So Hollywood gets everything wrong again. If Newsroom covered Roman Polanski’s crimes, they’d change the 13-year-old girl to 13-year-old Scotch,” said Gutfeld about the Sorkin series and Tinseltown. Last season, Newsroom called the Tea Party the “American Taliban.” Sorkin has said that Season 2 of the fictional cable news show will address that issue further as well as deal with the 2012 Presidential election. Check out the clip from The Five today here:

Well….it it fiction/fantasy and it is liberal without a doubt.
But if you enjoy it….that is great.
I thinks its a case of the pot calling the kettle black when Fox news decides what is and isnt “fantasy” LOL
TYVM for the laugh ;-)
Fox News sure is good at dishing it out….taking it…not so much.
Quite the opposite is true…That’s the main reason for their success..They are consistent and defend others (even libs) when the politically correct attacks come their way..Example: Juan Williams and Don Imus..and others.
I decide…whether it’s FOX (the leader in honest journalism) or HBO..
Fox “News” is a cesspool.
FOX NEWS is by far the fairest to all sides, right leaning but fair.
Do the FOX NEWS folks actually understand that a tv show is fantasy. News programs, on the other hand, are not meant to be.
We seriously need a ‘Like’ button on this site. Because I seriously like your post.
Fox ‘News’ biggest problem is their seemingly inability to distinguish fact from fiction. As in, what they put out every day isn’t fact, it’s fiction. The Newsroom is also fiction. Which Fox doesn’t recognize because they can’t tell the difference.
You seem to think that they were commenting on “that awful news program” instead of commenting on “that douchebag liberal screenwriter who wants to rewrite reality”. Remember that that The Newsroom was advertised as “reporting the news as it should have been reported” and not “changing the facts of history to match our agenda”. BECAUSE they are using real world events, the rest of us get to take umbrage when they turn facts into circle-jerk wishful thinking.
YES! The best post so far in this debate.
Speaking of “fantasy,” I remember watching Fox News coverage of the presidential election night … WHEN THE LIGHT DAWNED THAT THE POLLS THEY SPENT SO MUCH TIME BASHING WERE RIGHT AND THEY HAD HAD NO CLUE WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE REAL WORLD.
It was absolutely priceless.
rotfl
Were you rolling on the floor laughing like a maniac when your paycheck was reduced this year or did you do that when you discovered how much more you owed this year?
Or maybe you’re on Welfare? In THAT case, I get it. Smart vote.
Amen brother.
Okay, if a person’s paycheck was lowered this year, what is your opinion on the reason? Do you think Fox’s inability to report the news had something to do with it, or their inability to accept the results of the election or perhaps because the Repub house refused to work with the CURRENT, DULY ELECTED President to prevent it? I’m confused what your position is but all intelligent folks know it was the 3rd reason, none of those things had anything to do with people who (rightfully) laugh at Fox News, it had to do with your party refusing to do their jobs.
I love FOX but you’re right, it was a priceless evening to watch and for the reasons you stated..caveat: FOX contributors were right until Hurricane Sandy stopped the campaign for a week leaving poor, devastated NJ Governor Christie looking for a soul mate..
Talk about an act of God inspired romance..tough to overcome..
This just in: Fox News States the Obvious. Was this ever in question? It’s Aaron Sorkin, for Pete’s sake. There’s this thing called a remote that gives you the control to change the channel turn off the television.
No, Fox News makes up stories and hopes they will seem obvious to an uninformed public, but people are more informed than ever, hence the lack of credibility of Fox which makes up nonsense in a direct attempt to support one political party rather than report facts to all Americans about what’s happening in the world, nation and locally. They have no right to call themselves news except that it’s copyrighted as part of their name; “Fox News”.
Pot, have you met Kettle?
Why do people think that because a FICTIONAL CHARACTER says something controversial it must be because the writers hate the right? Whether or not its true is irrelevant. It’s a TV show. TV shows need to be about things. Don’t attack those “things” because you disagree with a fictional character, it makes you seem desperate to find things wrong just so you can complain about them. Plus it’s a little weird. Does David Chase think the mafia is something that is for the greater good of society? Some of his character think so! It must be true!
Do not fear alternative opinion.
The biggest sin here is that the show is boring. Everyone knows it’s a liberal fantasy. So about a third of the nation will potentially enjoy it. But even most liberals are scratching their head that this got a season 2.
You don’t speak for most liberals. And sorry to disappoint you, but it got a second season because it was well received by those who actually think Aaron Sorkin is one of the best writers who ever wrote a teleplay.
You’re mistaken if you believe you speak for ‘most liberals.’ And sorry to further disappoint you, but it got a second season because of critical acclaim and a faithful viewership consisting of those who believe Aaron Sorkin is one of the best writers ever to work for the medium.
Can we be serious here for just a moment? No one, and I mean no one, turns on Fox “News” for the facts. The folks that watch it are people that need to see their own right wing views confirmed, as it were, by commentators who share their own ultra conservative views, and it is just that simple. Patrick DeMent – seriously? “The leader in honest journalism.”??? “By far the fairest to all sides.”??? You don’t have to be honest with us, Pat, but at least be honest with yourself! Not that your sentiments aren’t humorous.
Get a job!
Of course it’s a fantasy, just like WEST WING. Viewers want to watch people with sterling ethics who always do the right thing, etc, helps us forget the real pack of idiots in Washington and the bigger pack of idiots who just drew attention to themselves by complaining in public.
This just in: Fox News Slams the Sun for being too bright.
I’d rather watch a “Liberal Fantasy” than a news channel masquerading around as “Fair and Balanced”.
Who’s with me on this?
Airheads are with you on that. God bless FOX–best news org on TV, with the ratings to prove it. And as the Obama regime unravels with the IRS, NSA, Benghazi, and other scandals, FOX’s numbers will only grow.
Hahahaha…wait are you serious? Fox News isn’t even a news channel. All they do is spread there twisted “facts” and basically brainwash the public.
Wrong. It’s MSNBC that isn’t a news channel; the network’s president, Phil Griffin, admitted as much last week, trying to explain the stunning MSNBC ratings drop of twenty percent in the latest year-to-year numbers. He said: Hey, it was a period with a lot of news and that’s not what we do here.
By contrast, FOX is indeed a hard-news operation, with a terrific corps of reporters and anchors who play it straight–like James Rosen, whose reportorial skills were apparently sufficient to earn him Eric Holder’s outrageous and illegal scrutiny; Ed Henry, current president of the White House Correspondent’s Association; Catherine Herridge, whose dogged Benghazi reporting won such widespread praise; etc etc. Critics of FOX–who will often admit that they don’t actually watch the network–like to confuse (or pretend to confuse) these solid reporters with the admittedly right-wing commentators who are given FOX primetime shows. Well, MSNBC gives its shows to LEFT-wing hosts. The difference is, that’s all that MSNBC does, 24/7, every daypart. No news operation of its own.
You’re delusional if you think Fox News is a legitimate news channel.
Well said. If anyone replies to the contrary with no reason as to why Fox News is not “Fair and Balanced”, then they’re a typical liberal living in a liberal fantasy, much like Aaron Sorkin.
Fox only gets ratings because old people can’t find the “clicker” while young people don’t even have TV’s. They watch everything on their laptops. And I assure you, they are not watching Fox. You can’t bring up the NSA without mentioning The PATRIOT act with a straight face and Benghazi – Even Fox is done with that.
FNC is the only true news organization out there, evidenced by the fact that the Obama Administration has gone out of its way to jump on Fox News for daring to actually report the news and not be a lapdog for Obama like the rest of the media. If the media actually did their job and vetted this guy, we might actually have a competent person in the Whote House for once.
As for “The Newsroom”, it is nothing more than HORRIFICALLY BAD liberal fantasy. The West Wing at least was interesting, this show is just plain awful, evidenced in the fact that Sorkin decided to change things up late last year. When your journalist decides to recite liberal talking points and make that an “edgy” thing to do, it’s laughable at best.
what do you believe they neglected to inform us about? Lets look at actual facts for once, I know seeing how you support Fox News that facts may scare you but here we go. John McCain was the most liberal candidate for the Republican party and won the primary with a huge margin. I voted for him. Then Sarah Palin was made his running mate, opened her mouth and his numbers dropped. You want to blame the election to Obama not being properly vetted, people like you made outrageous claims like how he wasn’t born in America, which if you looked into the history of the candidates, you would have discovered that John McCain wasn’t born in America, he was born on the Panama base. Obama didn’t win because of anything in his past, he won because McCain supporters like me saw Sarah Palin, heard her when she moved her mouth, and said sorry John, I don’t trust you to stay alive for the next four years, and that crazy lady scares the crap out of me.
I’ll be the bitch in the audience with the use cards.
“Will McAvoy” is a Republican, idiots. And the opening speech in the pilot is one of the greatest pro-America speeches ever written.
He’s a Republican in name only, idiot–none of the positions that Sorkin ascribes to him reflect mainstream Republican/conservative thought in any way. And that speech that left you so wet was one of the most long-winded, histrionic, ham-fisted and deadly dull monologues this side of….well, every other Aaron Sorkin script.
And you are wrong.
He’s a republicans because he’s of fairness and small government. But he’s not in favor of small government that so small it fits into our bedrooms, he is for the Constitution and not for throwing it out in the name of some BS called “national security” that has never made us safe.
And if any of you here think Fox News is reporting anything close to news you are a pathetic human. They are the worse of cable “news” channels because at least the others admit when they made a mistake, but none of the three actually report news worth reporting anymore.
Would you please re-post your comment, this time in English?
The only fantasy here is Fox’s contention that they’re fair and balanced.
Does ANYONE on hear realize that the show is about a conservative, right wing REPUBLICAN? FOX doesn’t even know what they’re saying nowadays! How is the show a liberal fantasy when 1.) the show is a serialized drama, not a fantasy and 2.) the show is about a REPUBLICAN news anchor, not a liberal
The republican you speak of doesn’t hate gay people, challenges the tea party for their bat shit crazy ways, and doesn’t substitute rightwing talking points for real journalism, so as far as they’re concerned is a RINO.
This from the same folks who call you out for slamming them when you quote them word-for-word. Try looking in the mirror folks. There’s a reason your viewers are always the most uninformed.
you libbies are sooo predictable – now your argument is “it’s only a TV SHOW”
and you progs know that by controlling pop culture and academia (which you libbies do…took you a hundred years to accomplish it – but you did) you control the narrative and the agenda…you sheep hate fox news because they call you out on it!
for a buncha so-called ‘tolerant” people – you sure do HATE opposing viewpoints…only “freedom of speech” if they agree with you
your king 0bama uses the irs to intimidate those he doesn’t agree with politically, spies on journalists he doesn’t agree with and lies about a terrorist attack to the American people and you sheeple are ok with that
makes you sheeple because if a repub;ican did that – AARON SORKIN WOULD HAVE ALREADY WRITTEN A MOVIE ABOUT IT WITH ALL HIS “SORKIN-Y” DIALOGUE
so libs – spare us your “high minded tolerance” – you’re really just intolerant SHEEP
now go back to blaming bush
“your king 0bama uses the irs to intimidate those he doesn’t agree with politically, spies on journalists he doesn’t agree with and lies about a terrorist attack to the American people and you sheeple are ok with that”
Yeah, you’re 100% right. I’m sure while he’s leading the free world, the President is personally carrying out grudges using the IRS and is personally spying on journalists. And hey, that Benghazi non-story will stick one of these days if you geniuses keep pushing it.
By the way, while admiring all your thoughtful, salient, fact-based points, I almost forgot to marvel at your mastery of punctuation and grammar. I’m assuming you wrote your first draft of this screed on the wall of a Stuckey’s bathroom?
And just because pop culture isn’t right wing enough for backwater ideologues like you doesn’t mean it’s liberal. I’ll grant you that academia is liberal. But that’s mostly because college professors are smart.
…you left out, “Now get off my lawn, hooligans.”
I don’t think you used the word “sheep” or “sheeple” enough times here.
Isn’t Fox News the Conservatives Fantasy? What is the difference other than Newsroom caters to people with brains and Fox News caters to morons.
The difference is that The Newsroom knows it’s fiction.
The Newsroom’s viewers aren’t fully cognizant that it’s fiction. That’s how liberals become liberals: failure to discern TV from real life. Liberals get their perspective on news stories by watching them re-created on those awful “CSI” shows (and all the other “ripped from the headlines” garbage). Liberals know history 100% from “powerful” movies like JFK, Lincoln, and Cold Mountain. Let’s not forget all these wonderful cable miniseries that teach them all about Rome, the Old West, prohibition days, the peace movements, and everything else liberals are experts on. The funny thing is that liberals freely admit this when they’re around other liberals. I see it every day at school. I’m doing post-grad work, so I learned a long time ago to keep my mouth shut and smile and joke around as if I agree (this is the only way to survive at brand name colleges). The professors and students harken to movies or TV as if they are true at least 3 times in a 2 hour lecture. It’s always phrased like this “You should see [this movie]. It TOTALLY SHOWS how [X] happened.” I put “totally shows” in caps because that is almost always the way it’s phrased. If there’s a conservative around, liberals pretend that they read books (they don’t. They read copious amounts of magazines and websites, but no books save Twilight and 50 Shades of dumb) and stick their noses in the air. If there’s no conservative around, liberals do nothing but talk about how wonderful “The Newsroom” was last night, or they get giddy and start jumping up and down because they just read that a new installment of their favorite movie is going to come out
If you want a quality depiction of a newsroom without much bias then watch the fifth season of The Wire from HBO. Or watch the entire series. OZ and The Wire have tackled the news media enough already.
Then Newsroom isn’t about the media. It’s about certain political values. The scenery happens to be a newsroom but that’s secondary to the true objective of the show.
The political values the Newsroom caters to are foreign to FOX, CNBC, MSNBC and all the rest – it caters to the idea of making an informed opinion, of being given the facts and then making up your own mind.
That’s not part of today’s so called ‘news’ media.
Wait, I thought Fox News was a fantasy show about a conservative newsroom.
Thank you. FOX NEWS is full of crap 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. And they call out a one hour entertainment program, for actually call them out. The thing is, everything that is written by Arron Sorkin about FOX NEWS IS THE TRUTH.
You cracked me up..spot on brother
This would seem to be an invaluable compliment. HBO should start using this quote in promos for the show.
I also think it’s fairly telling that these Fox News hosts would consider the show a “fantasy”; of course! No cable news host would ever really eschew yellow journalism and the desire for higher ratings and instead report actual news!
Isn’t every Aaron Sorkin show a ‘fantasy’? I’m sure Fox News probably hated the West wing as well, a liberal educated president who wasn’t actually a politician, and cared about people, and cared about doing right…and who never would have been elected :)
I’d say there’s a 50:50 shot that no one at FOX News has watched the newsroom, it’s ironic (or maybe timed) that the week they re-hire the tea party’s spokes idiot that they go after the show that demonstrated very clearly how The Tea Party is the American Taliban.
The Newsroom is a show about people doing the news without any agenda…FOX News can’t possibly understand that…it’s the news the way the news should be done – it presents facts – it avoids bias – it avoids slant – it makes the evil look evil – the problem for FOX News is that they are in favor of the evil
gutfeld is nuts – he makes crazy comparisons about a fictional news station’s reporting, whereas, he is in a supposedly, “real” news station that is the polar opposite of what he accused of being a “liberal fantasy”.
What we Republicans object to is Sorkin writing a “Republican” character who says things only an angry lefty would say. My dog is more conservative than Will McAvoy. This character is just another America-hating elitist snob who makes millions of dollars biting the hand that feeds him, not unlike, uh, Aaron Sorkin.
Hey Aaron, you want to hate your country through your characters? Make ‘em mindless lefties like you. Or hire a writer who actually knows how a conservative thinks.
His opening speech was fantastic.
Give us a break. In GOP bizarro world, hating the US Government means you love the country, hating the president of the US means you love the country, and those of us who don’t feel that way automatically hate it.
