EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures and MGM have started talks for Sam Mendes to return and direct Daniel Craig in the next installment of the James Bond franchise. Mendes helmed the last installment, Skyfall, an audience-pleasing film that grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide to become the biggest Bond film and the eighth-highest-grossing film of all time. John Logan is writing the next film.
There has been much speculation on whether Mendes would come back — right now he’s knee-deep preparing for the West End launch of the stage musical Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, which will then move to Broadway. That happened because Mendes bowed out, claiming that musical and King Lear were his new priorities and producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli seemed resigned and they moved on. Recently, he and the producers got back in touch. While Mendes’ first love is theater, it became clear that the producers wanted him and he wanted to return, and the only thing standing in the way were these stage commitments that Mendes felt obligated to do. So, they’ve decided to wait for him to work through those other commitments, and he’s now making a deal to start production probably next year. What’s the hurry? Craig doesn’t seem to have aged since he took the Bond role; he’s always in rocking shape. While Mendes looked doubtful, a bunch of names have been floated in the press, from Ang Lee to Nicolas Winding Refn and Christopher Nolan. I’m not sure there is much validity to any of them, but now it is a moot point, because Mendes will be the director of the next Bond. A Mendes return should tickle the 007 crowd. Like Craig’s first outing Casino Royale, Skyfall scratched beneath the stone killer/lover Bond facade with an intelligent spy story that provided a sense of how the agent became that cold ruthless agent. Audiences responded in both cases. Neither MGM nor Sony would comment.

Excellent.
Ok…Mendes, please don’t make another unwatchable movie and approving people wearing dopey looking wigs and implausible storylines.
And you get paid millions of dollars? You should be embarrassed to cash those checks.
Bondphile
Skyfall was decent, Casino Royale best. My issue is American studios are force feeding 3d and comic book stuff for the billion dollar box office payday via international markets. Please explain the lines for Fast & Furious. Who guessed the twitter crowd had money for admission?
Unfortunately, the fact that Skyfall is the 8th highest grossing film of all-time speaks less to the quality of Skyfall and more to how terrible hit movies have become as a whole.
To quote the great philosopher, Opus T. Penguin, “PLPLPLPLPLPLPLPLPLPLP!”
Memo to Sam & Daniel Craig: Write a truly engaging script. Not one that’s preposterous and silly like Skyfall….really – no Bond girl? Really? And that ending with M and James wandering through a burnt out castle – Really? And how many more seas can Bond fall into and float to the top intact?
Please bring back the James Bond that we had in Casino Royale…please try.
Oh, please.
In reality, Skyfall is one of the best popular films in years.
Popular cause…
You’re either on Facebook or doing what else? Movies. Facebook being so popular goes to show people have money to burn and **nothing to do**. Marketing is THE #1 factor for movies nowadays… marketing has to be better than the movie itself, considering everything is a re-imagined story or sequel..
Now I realize why movie execs can’t figure out how to get boys 12-17 into the theaters, with all that free time their either on Facebook or in the closet…. Duh.
He didn’t say it was good because it was popular, he said it was good AND popular. But thanks for the Facebook rant. RIVETING! When will your book be released?
Yes, but only if “popular” is a synonym for box office.
Titanic was popular too. Doesn’t mean it’s good.
Skyfall was a mediocre movie overall and a terrible Bond movie period. It was arty and directed by someone renowned within the business so non-Bond people fellated it. Hell, Michael Apted was renowned and World is Not Enough is just as plausible and intelligent as Skyfall. Which is to say it’s neither.
Maybe this time they’ll put the gunbarrel in the middle of the movie because artistic license or whatever.
Can’t say better.
Having Mendes back is OK.
What is truly frightening is the Logan’s return
Cry me a river! This is fantastic news. Skyfall was the first Bond film in years with a truly engaging story.
memo to SallyinChicago –
What a laugh. I’ve been a bond fan all my life, seen them all and Skyfall is by FAR the best. Saw it three times in the theatre. The fans agree – you shoulda seen the bond fan site messages boards when the movie came out. And these guys are hard core, life long band fans. That’s why the Mendes is being welcomed back.
As far as no Bond girl . . . . .maybe you should go SEE the movie before you comment? This was this beautiful girl named Eve, played by Naomie Harris, who actually turned out to be . . . . . never mind . . . . welcome back Mr. Mendes!
Really? Because the James Bond from Casino Royale and the James Bond from Skyfall are essentially the exact same person. An emotionally damaged man who does dirty things who lives in a grey world. The only real difference is that unlike the other Bond films, Skyfall actually acknowledged that James Bond gets older (seven years have passed since Casino Royale) and with the amount of physical activity that Bond engages in, it takes a huge toll on his body.
M was actually the Bond Girl in Skyfall. As creepy as that is, it’s true.
Exactly – Casino Royal was an excellent Bond Movie.
The others wasted D. Craig’s talent, compromised the franchise, and were typical, very average, unrealistic and rediculous.
Casino Royal – was solid because………Realistic, edgey, serious, engaging, tense and more.
Let’s stop with the silliness and keep it real.
The fact that people feel the need to bash Skyfall blows my mind. They hire an A-list director, who then hires an A-list crew including one of the greatest cinematographers alive. They include many of the traditional Bond elements that have been missing from the Craig films thus far, and a villain played by an Academy Award-winning actor. They take risks with the story instead of simply giving the audience what they’ve come to expect after fifty years of the same thing… and yet it’s still worthy of negativity?
If you have problems with the film, that’s fine, but is it really SO bad that you have to try and convince others about it?
No, not in the real world.
What flavor was your kool-aid?
Amen, Michael.
Woo hoo! Thrilled that they decided to wait for him! Next to Goldfinger, I think Skyfall was my favorite Bond film. They just need Shirley Bassey to do the next theme song again though, that would make it perfect.
Let’s hope so Skyfall was a great film and I look forward to see how he will top Skyfall.
Are you insane? Skyfall was–without a doubt–one of the stupidest movies EVER MADE. And that’s saying a lot for a Bond film.
I agree with you. One of the best Bonds for me. And I guess there are a lot of us that like stupid movies-LOL
Last one sucked. I know it wasn’t Sam’s fault… but that story was ridiculous.
Just cause it’s Daniel Craig doesn’t make it cool.
TOTALLY Agree. I don’t know why the critics loved it….boring, improbably, impossible, unsuspenseful….longgggg….and who decided James wouldn’t have a girl?
Totally agree.
The secret to a great Bond movie is a great Bond girl, which the producers rarely seem to get (Casino Royale being a notable exception).
What’s more embarrassing is BAFTA giving it best British film of the year… talk about a Golden Globes move.
Whew finally, a stage musical of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Clap your hands, universe!
Absolutely brilliant!
Deadline seem hell bent on proving the trades wrong at any given opportunity. Mendes has already bowed out, time to move on.
I love Skyfall, but don’t force Sam unless he really wants to direct.
The best thing Sam Mendes can do now is taking Rebecca Hall to the next Bond movie as a Bond Girl. I love Casino Royale. I`m not an admirer of the other two Bond movies.
Well, if this is true, then somebody is played a good game here…Sam, well done…. The check must be huge. But you deserve it. Great Bond movie. And to the 000 minority who denies this… Stop posting your opinions on all the boards…We are all going to see next one anyway…And you probably too..
Out of a finite range of options, Nolan would be a far better choice. “Skyfall” was just so dull and stupid. I can’t say I’d be thrilled seeing Mendes directing again.
Pretty sure we’ve already seen a Christopher Nolan Bond film — called Skyfall.
“Pretty sure we’ve already seen a Christopher Nolan Bond film — called Skyfall.”
One could make a very strong argument that Inception was Nolan’s Bond film…;)
Just wait for him. It’ll be worth it for everyone.
Wether Mendes is directing or not wouldn’t of stopped the next bond from being a huge hit. Skyfall was a huge hit not just financially but with the majority of fans, it’s the only bond I’ve felt the need to see in theatres more than once.
The praise that’s being heaped on Mendes (and this isn’t saying that he didn’t do a stellar job) should go to John Logan, not only did he write possibly one of the best bonds ever but he also has a badass name that deserves to be front and centre in the new promos.
You saw it twice?
You must be sixteen.
The Script stunk to high hell. The WORST.
You must’ve really loved Home Alone, then.
You must have not heard of Straw Dogs, then.
I thought Mendes and Logan were doing a TV show?
Fantastic news – Skyfall was my personal favorite bond of all time (Goldfinger is now #2, For Your Eyes Only now #3) and I was hoping they could work this out somehow.
If you’ve got a great team in place . . . .stick with it. Very Smart.
But what about all the Chris Nolan groupies? They will now be suicidal. They live and breathe for Nolan he has to do the Bond movie of their incepted dark knight wet dreams. They have a Nolan fetish anything he does they masturbate to they worship him and they were counting on the rumor being true of him doing Bond. Have you no sympathy for all the Nolan maniacs? Do you want them to kill themselves from sorrow and grief?
I don’t think Nolan will never direct a Bond movie unless it’s a reboot with a new Bond. Not that Sony could afford him without taking some cash out of their “designated for Will Smith” account.
‘Skyfall’ was the first time an Oscar winner directed a Bond movie and the results speak for themselves. This is great news for 007 fans. Make the deal!
since this is the 24th outing, and they’ve had multiple people play Felix Leiter, may I suggest Kiefer Sutherland for the role?
He IS Jack Bauer…and Jack doesn’t play second fiddle to anyone
Everyone is saying there was no Bond girl. There was Naomie Harris as Eve – hell she was better than the Bond girls were . So many complainers , If you don’t like Mendes films, don’t go. You aren’t being forced to go.
I thought she was amazing as well. It was great to see a female character be something other than just Bond’s romantic conquest. But I guess some people don’t yet realize that its 2013 and we now have female heads of state, soldiers, spies, etc.
Not worth the wait for Mendes. Do the next movie now! And bring back Paul haggis to write it over John Logan. And follow up on quantum. I don’t need to learn about bonds past. And give bond cooler gadgets from the new q. I think skyfall, while good, is over rated and QOS is way under rated.
Not really a Mendes fan, but I thought the directing in Skyfall was excellent even though the writing was wanting.
I think the move from Bond as a cartoonish hero to something more tethered to reality has been an excellent evolution. But, they haven’t yet done the same for the antagonists. One of the reasons the 60’s era Bonds worked was because they had echos of the cold war in them. None of these Bond films really address the present-day threat to Western civilization in the same realistic way. Make the next bad guy a true believing Islamic Jihadists, give the story a credible plotline and maybe you’d have something.
That would be great news! Skyfall was excellent.
