UK distributor Kaleidoscope has picked up Maiken Baird and Michelle Major’s Venus & Serena from K5 International. The documentary follows the tennis-playing Williams sisters through a year of their lives. The film will get a release timed to the 2013 Wimbledon Championship in June. The BBC will also broadcast it this summer. The film is exec produced by Alex Gibney with music by Wyclef Jean. Magnolia is releasing in the U.S. this summer.
Duran Duran will be in town next week to headline Amfar’s 20th anniversary Cinema Against Aids benefit, and they’ve also got a movie screening in the market. Arclight Films, in collaboration with Little Studio Films, is selling international rights to Duran Duran Unstaged. The David Lynch-helmed concert film previously had a one-light live online stream on YouTube and Vevo but the special director’s cut has never before been released to the public.
Zac Efron and Amber Heard have signed to star in Autobahn from Welcome To The Punch director Eran Creevy. IM Global will finance the car chase thriller that starts shooting in Germany this fall. It’s about an American backpacker who becomes involved with a ring of drug smugglers as a pick-up driver and ends up being pursued by his employers across Munich’s high-speed freeways. Creevy’s Punch producers Ben Pugh and Rory Aitken and Automatik’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones are producing. F. Scott Frazier and Creevy wrote the script. Chris Cowles and Chris Fenton of H2F will executive produce. CAA arranged financing and represents U.S. rights.
Lakeshore Entertainment horror thriller The Vatican Tapes is being presented to buyers here in Cannes and Sierra/Affinity has already closed deals in Canada, Australia, Germany, the Middle East, Thailand, Turkey and Latin America. Mark Neveldine writes and directs the exorcism pic that starts in July. Lionsgate is releasing in the fall of 2014.
