Smash star Debra Messing is returning to half-hour comedy with a starring role in CBS‘ untitled Julie Rottenberg/Elisa Zuritsky pilot (formerly Mother’s Day). In addition to playing the lead, Will & Grace alumna Messing will serve as a co-executive producer on the project, based on an Israeli format, in one of the richest talent deals this pilot season. The untitled comedy centers on 40-year-old Ella (Messing) who, in order to successfully navigate through the demanding life of being a mother of three, a lover, a friend and a career woman, constantly lies her way out of and into situations — little lies, big lies, white and at times not-so-white lies. The project reunites Emmy winner Messing with Rottenberg and Zuritsky who served as co-executive producers on Smash. Messing’s casting is formally in second position to the NBC Broadway drama, which is not expected to return after a very low rated Season 2. The original Israeli series was created by Daniela London-Dekel and Dana Eden, written by London-Dekel and produced by Eden’s Eden Prods. Rottenberg and Zuritsky executive produce the CBS version, from CBS TV Studios, with London-Dekel, Eden and Keshet’s Avi Nir and Ran Telem. Messing is with Gersh, 3 Arts and Rick Genow.

WHY DOES SHE WORK SO MUCH?
Because she’s a very talented comedic actress. I personally think this project sounds like a dog, but network comedy is lucky to have her back.
I like Debra Messing. I believe that she would be perfect in a bio-pic of Myrna Loy!!! They look so similar!
So is this like the female Todd Margaret?
Why is CBS developing so many comedies? It seems like it never ends.
Especially considering they are only going to pick up three or four new comedies most likely (and two of those are spoken for in Mom and the Untitled Greg Garcia pilot).
You do realize that network programming isn’t the only game in town now. With Amazon and Netflix focusing on original content and CBS’ recent deal to purchase half of TVGN, the net may be looking at developing programming that it can sell to those sources. Who knows? CBS may be looking at TVGN to be its version of USA or FX, and somewhat serialized dramas like Hostages, Ordained, and Reckless and the single-cams could be CBS’ best bets to seek viewers that watch these other cable nets.
Does this mean SMASH has been canceled or is the just leaving the show?
They’ve hired her in second position.
Do you even have to ask if Smash has been cancelled?
When a Celebrity is a producer on their own “New SHow” we get a bad show. Patrica Heaton is a GREAT EXAMPLE of this. Her Show “The Middle” would be much better if she had less control. There was a show with Jason Alexander and his show “Bob PAtterson” he threw himself in the writers room and his show was terrible. Julia Louise-Dreyfuss was a co-producer un the unwatchable “Watching Ellie”. Kelsey Grammer did this
And of course, we all know how badly Seinfeld did… People produce/co-write for their own shows all the time. There is very little correlation and definitely no causation to support the idea that actor-producers kill their own shows. It’s hard to have a good sitcom in today’s market. That’s the issue, multitasking isn’t.
What’s with CBS and all these single cams? Are they going to add an hour of comedies on Thursday to combat Michael J. Fox and are they planning an hour of single cams?
The chances of many of these comedies getting picked up is slim, so the single cam pilots that CBS has on deck may not signal anything new. Super Clyde, though would be an amazing pickup. Rupert Grint, Tyler Labine and Stephen Fry seem like they would be an unbelievable trio and the show is risky– which is what CBS needs in it’s endless formula of number-crunching boring.
She should just be an actress. Learn your lines and your marks. Stay away from “Creative Side”. Your an actress who is well paid. Let the other people do lifting. There much stronger then you.
Ewe couldent bee moor write!
I knew it…we auditioned for the role of Griffin two weeks ago and the was a red head auditioning for Mark Saks with ius and with SMASH ending and this filming in NEW YORK I knew they were courting her…she is PERFECT for the role just wish they thought my Griffin fit the *GRIFFIN* riole
There’s so much talent on CBS pilots this season, despite the long odds of a pickup.
Meanwhile, NBC has burned so many bridges that they’re struggling to attract anybody with any star power whatsoever to the network. No-one wants to risk their reputations on the sinking ship.
I simply love the smell of ignorance in the morning. If anyone wants a lesson in uninformed, sensationalist writing, the above comment is perfect. NBC’s issue is not with attracting talent. Network television starring roles mean money for stars. Period. See Sean Hayes, Michael J. Fox, John Stamos, Martin Short
I’m so sick and tired of these idiotic sitcoms and romcoms about how hard it is to be a working mother as if billions of women don’t do it every day.
Women burned their bras for this?
LOL, so true.
I love Debra and I get that CBS is a ratings powerhouse, but I also feel a little sad for talented actors and writers when they go to CBS. It’s like saying I no longer care about quality, I just have private school tuition to pay.
WTF does this even mean? Seriously? What are you saying?
That CBS is basically McDonald’s when it comes to comedy– uninspired, unambitious and low quality but high sales because it’s SO familiar and bland.
That is SO spot-on. NBC comedies are the smartest ones on television and are treated like red-headed stepchildren from a former marriage. It’s amazing to me that they are so grossly overlooked for the lazy CBS brand of comedy.
She’s perfect for this role. Audiences will love it!
I love the middle.. feel it’s so under prkmoted
The logline is vague, so I’m not sure what it’s really about. And agree with the posters that with CBS not really needing much, the odds are long for anything to make it to air..However IF it makes it, I’m happy she’s back in a comedy. Drama is not her forte.she just overacts and chews the scenery.
:)
Sounds like she’ll be playing Lucy Ricardo again…. : ) Must have been her role model.
Since Will & Grace she’s been a show and movie killer…
she’s wonderful in everything she does
The above comment about Patricia Heatons involved ad a producer of her own show, that makes for a bad show
I beg to differ. Us moms live the show! I have related to alot that has gone on in that family and it can make you feel better about what’s going on around you.Getting the good laugh can help you when you may see the same kind of thing going on in your family. It center around muddle class income though I can also see some some of those scenarios
she is so shrill and so not funny, it’s just painful to watch. and the profile. can’t she just go away for awhile…..
