Embattled Today anchor Matt Lauer, already the focus of blistering criticism for the ouster of co-anchor Ann Curry and the ratings slide at NBC‘s morning show, has long been rumored to be on the chopping block — despite his $25 million contract and recent efforts aimed at rehabilitating his image. Here’s the latest wrinkle: I hear NBC toppers recently reached out to CNN’s Anderson Cooper to replace Lauer on the show before the end of the year. After their initial approach to Cooper, I hear NBC reached out to Lauer to get his blessing about the changeover. But I heard they got pushback from the Today veteran, who contacted Cooper to express his disapproval. I also hear that call caught Cooper by surprise, as he had assumed Lauer had been brought on board before NBC began making overtures. Cooper has been one of the leading faces at CNN, though I hear his contract has an out, and he previously was able to do his syndicated daytime talk show in addition to his CNN program.
Cooper’s is just the latest name to be rumored to replace Lauer, who inked a long-term contract last year. Ryan Seacrest, current Today co-host Willie Geist and Meet The Press host David Gregory have all been reportedly considered by NBC. Lauer, meanwhile, has been tied to rumors (along with Cooper, Brian Williams and Dan Patrick) to take over for Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek when the longtime game show host decides to retire.

In order for viewers to return to Today, NBC needs to get rid of Matt Lauer.
This would be another stupid NBC move. Matt Lauer is still the best part of the Today Show and the reason I watch it. Savannah Guthrie is much better as a host than Ann Curry, and she has significantly improved over the last few months. No, she’s not Katie Couric or Meredith Vierra yet. But it takes time for anyone to develop that level of charm/ability. Remember Jimmy Fallon, the future host of the Tonight Show, during his first 8-10 months on the job? He was awkward and took some time to improve and get comfortable in the role. Now, he’s great. Very comfortable, funny, and has fully earned the Tonight Show gig. If NBC was smart, they would stick with Lauer (who still is the best current morning show host on TV) and Savannah for another year.
Fallon WAS awkward? True. He “was” awkward Friday night when I made a point of watching him after avoiding him like the plague, to see if he’d improved any in the ad-libbing and not-sounding- like-a-run-of-the-mill-average-guy-at-a-party-with-nothing-witty- to-say department, now that he’s all been annointed as the next Tonight Show host. It’s still a travesty that this guy is taking over that franchise. And no, I’m not a Leno shill. He rushes into the opening monologue without connecting with the audience, runs through each joke and hurries to the next before, again, connecting with the crowd response to each joke. We can tell he’s on auto pilot. But still… he’s better off the top of his head at the desk than Fallon is.
I agree with the post above. Matt Lauer is pretty fucking good at his job. This bad buzz will pass and he’ll go on for another 5 years. NBC should keep Lauer, and offer Jon Stewart a billion dollars to host the Tonight Show.
that is why the ratings are sliding because Lauer is sooooo good
Matt Lauer is the best. Morning TV is comfort viewing. That’s why Good Morning America is doing well right now — it has the most stability in its line-up, and audiences feel comfortable with those people. All of this hatred against Matt Lauer is clearly being posted by ABC staffers who want the competition out of the picture. While the Today Show isn’t as high in the ratings as it once was, ALL of the current viewers (which is still a large amount) are watching because they like Matt Lauer. They’re certainly not watching every day for anyone else on that show. NBC wouldn’t be stupid enough to throw away all of those viewers who would most likely end up at ABC. Lauer should (and will) be around for many more years.
I’m a big Matt Lauer fan. I like the “Good Morning America” hosts too, but Matt Lauer is still better. CBS is a snooze. If NBC cuts Lauer loose (which would be an idiotic move), there is no question that he would end up hosting CBS’s morning show. Lauer is the best interviewer in morning TV.
I am sure NBC is listening to you.
You’re right. They probably are. That’s why people spend so much time posting on this site. It’s clearly read by the industry execs who matter. If you’re reading these comments (and I’m reading these comments) I can assure you that NBC executives (and their staff) are reading them too.
Oh, goody!! if NBC is reading these comments, then here’s one for you:
be smart and let Lauer go. Think about ALL the $$$$$ NBC will save. Lauer is not worth $25 mil. This is NBC’s chance to do the right thing — by all accounts, the majority of viewers want to see Lauer go, and now’s the time to listen to us!! Caio, Lauer!
My apology to you: this snarky response was directed to Dan who thinks NBC should hang on to the “Dark Lord of MOURNING Shows” Lauer
I agree one hundred per cent. Matt is perfect in his position. NBC are using him as a scape goat. They should start protecting him instead of throwing him under the bus. I have to say I can’t bear the nine o’clock hour and turn off every day.
I agree with you all the way… when is NBC going to take some responsibility… leave Matt alone… Matt is one of the best journalists around… shame on nbc.
NBC is not using Lauer as a scapegoat. All the bad press and unflattering comments made by viewers, Lauer has created for himself. NBC should unsurreptitiously say “so long” to Lauer just like they did with Ann Curry.
You are 100% correct! I wanted to post my opinion, but you already summed it up, perfectly. Ann Curry was SO Emperor’s New Clothes – I’ve been a fan of Lauer’s since he began on Local News when I lived in NYC – he’s the BEST. Clever, considerate, intelligent, aggressive when necessary (hello Tom Cruise, for example). NBC – GET BEHIND him! Use loyalty as your guide. I’m a fan of Cooper’s, but he must have been furious receiving that call…. come ON, NBC – PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ….
You must work for ABC/Disney. Another year of those two on The Today Show will bury NBC for a decade. NBC needs to act fast by clearing the decks of this self-made disaster.
Yes,Knight Sky, panic and make a rash decision. Always a good plan. Thank you.
Are you listening (and reading) NBC??? All your answers are in the texts, tweets, emails, comments, blah, blah, blah of the smarter-than-you-public. If you haven’t figured it out YET, here’s what you do:
fire Lauer for, well, do we really have to spell it out?
fire Guthrie for, well, raising her middle finger in salute toward Lauer, although, let’s face it, he deserved it
Loved Matt for many years, but he became too smug, too judgmental and a little arrogant. His current cohost is no draw either. Don’t want to wake up to a lawyer. They both need to go and start fresh.
Possibly, someone can answer this question? When Comcast took control of NBC, why was Leno’s $30 million contract cut in half, yet Lauer was given a new contract worth $25 million? Not really a fan of Jay’s, but he’s been with the network for more than 20 years, not counting the time he put in as Johnny Carson’s permanent guest-host on “Tonight?” He’s always getting the shaft. Yet, “Tonight” is the #1 show in late-night and Leno is getting more younger viewers than Kimmel, Fallon, Letterman, etc. Something stinks at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
I will not watch the today show anymore because of Matt.
Anderson Cooper would be great but he needs to stay were he is.
Totally agree..Used to like Matt on the Today Show until he became to smug, judgemental and way to arrogant, gee, sounds like another host from the past, Bryant Gumbel and what happened to him!! I loved Ann Curry, she was great at co-hosting and should of never been let go. Very tacky what NBC did to her!!I no longer watch the Today Show, not as long as Matt is the main Host and also because of the way they did this to her. Terrible..terrible…
I agree: Bryant Gumbel was the height of arrogance and Lauer has followed his path. Ann Curry was not a good fit for the couch, but I love her just the same. And, the way NBC let her go is and was unconscionable and ruthless.
Yes I agree Lauer should go and he should take Savannah with him, Ann was done wrong bring her back to the show.
Totally agree. Bring Anne back to the TODAY Show!!!! I refuse to watch it after what they did to her….
I totally agreee. Lauer’s shelf life has expired and his presence is rotting the entire NBC Daytime line-up. GMA continues to bury The Today Show and the audience won’t come back to sample NBC until Matt is gone. His slick routine has grown stale and predictable, plus the American public will never forget his backstabbing of Ann Curry. He’s a weasel and everyone knows it. Karma has come back on him and he knows it. Flush Lauer and maybe Today can rebuild.
But good Lord, Anderson Cooper? Didn’t anyone with the Today Show watch the now-cancelled “Anderson Live”?? He was complete paralyzed in interviews because he seems to have no natural curiosity. Nice guy, blockhead.
Cooper is much better at interviewing regular people, politicians, scientists and intellectuals or artists that come from a “real” background. He doesn’t seem to find celebrities that interesting, though. I also think he would be unhappy doing such a lightweight show fulltime.
What are you talking about? Anderson Live is not canceled. I watch it everyday. Anderson Cooper is perfect and wonderful and he’s not awkward. He’s funny and very easy on the eyes. I don’t watch the Today show, but I will DEFINITELY watch it if AC is on there! I’ll watch it everyday! <3
Matt Gutman should be brought in. He is very very good. I would also add Nancy Giles as co-anchor or featured reporter. Lisa Ling would also be a good choice to contribute stories for the show
This is not about the current hosts and cohosts it’s all about the way NBC atrociously mishandled Ann Currie’s dismissal! Trying to put a game face on it is like putting a bandaid on a cancer.
Ann was merely a pawn in The Today Shows desperate grab at the ratings game. Shame on Lauer and company for the shabby way it was handled (or mishandled?). I was an NBC devotee for over thirty years, but not anymore.
I think Anderson would be a terrifc replacement for Matt, who takes himself much too seriously. Anderson has a humble, normal persona. You’d never guess he’s from Vanderbilt lineage of wealth and prestige.
Love the idea that Anderson could replace Matt. I’ m tired if this guy and Savanah
NBC don’t be stupid again -leave Matt alone. You know dam well why ABC GMA was doing so good because everyone was thrilled that Robin Roberts was well enough to return. Don’t judge ratings on the public’s feelings. I know I found myself watching GMA when she returned. Now I am back to Matt and would truly be lost if he was replaced. LEAVE IT ALONE.
Anderson would bring me back to Today. And if Ann came back as co-anchor, I would never leave NBC. I shifted over to ABC after Curry’s slaughter and Nails-on-chalkboard Savannah came on board.
Oh, hell no. I love Anderson Cooper delivering hard news — but for some reason (i.e., his penchant for anything Bravo-related because of his friendship with that Andy Cohen, his bitchiness, and his tendency to over share), left to his own devices on a talk show, he loses credibility. Unless he’s gonna reign in the sass, this may not be a good move for him.
Okay, I meant *rein* in. My bad.
I approve of anyone who feels compelled to correct a spelling error of their own.
I also approve of anyone who feels compelled to correct a spelling error of their own. So there!
A game show host is the perfect role for Lauer. If Anderson takes over the Today show, I might actually start watching for the first time, since I graduated from middle school.
I respect the work Anderson Cooper does. I only watch CNN because of Mr. Cooper and Wolf Blitzer. If he goes to Today…I don’t know. It’s like watching Morning Glory all over.
Funny, same here. Cooper and Blitzer are the only US news ancors I can watch. The rest seems to be opinionated, over-enthusiastic bordering on hysterical, loud, overly emotive…
What is the point of a long term contract if they can push Lauer out?!
You think he has a long term contract? He has less than 24 months. If you work at Wendies that is a long term contract. If you work for the Government – not-so-much!
Stupidity once again on display from NBC they have Willie Geist and he’s the best replacement for Lauer. Why does NBC screw up every single thing they ever try to do? They never should have talked to Cooper and naturally it leaks and it makes everyone look like the idiots they are. When you know you are an idiot the smart thing to do is keep that a secret but obviously the idiots at NBC never learned how to do this.
Couldn’t agree more! Basically the sole purpose of me watching CNN is because of Anderson. I’ve grown to like the network overall, but it’s still just because of my respect for Anderson Cooper.
Perfect for Cooper. He sold his soul at CNN where they call him a “journalist” – this is the next logical step for this self-righteous silver spooner.
Anderson Cooper has already proven that he’s not exactly cut out for daytime TV, ie. A N D E R S O N; so let’s cut the crap and bring in T.J. Holmes, he’s the best man for the job, hands downs!
Whilst I agree they need to get rid of Matt I just don`t think Anderson is the right fit for the Today show.
NO.. I love Anderson. I don’t want him on Today. He should let go the fluff. I just don’t want to see him there. I think Ryan would be a total mistake. They should just move Willie Geist in that Anchor chair. I think he is way better.
Gosh I bet if anyone asked Matt if he thought it would come to this. All that back stabbing and sneaking around. Being a Douche and Diva. Well the chickens have come home to roost. Couldn’t have happened to a more horrible person.
Ann I hope you are laughing your ass off.
Fire Matt Lauer and start auditioning for a new co-host. No brainer… He’s the worst.
David Muir is the best of ALL networks
Diane Sawyer needs to retire!
So let’s see, NBC is now dismantling Today and trying to push out the still-high rated Leno in late night after totally blowing up prime time.
Proud as a peacock?
The damage is irreparable. Time for Matt to go. And Jeopardy would be wise to avoid him.
The Today show should reintroduce “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” drop him off and then end the segment.
Good one. Maybe “Where in The World Will Matt Lauer End Up?” Probably on some type of celeb “news” show like Access Hollywood.
OMG! Love your comment. I have read probably a hundred comments regarding the (hopeful) firing of Lauer and yours is the best. Just imagining dropping Lauer off on some remote island and leaving him there is a stitch! Perhaps the public can vote on where to leave him. hee hee
to Wildcat: of all the comments left by viewers on various sites regarding Lauer, I hope THIS is the one that he and NBC reads! Maybe this will be the flame and fire that lights up their butts to can Lauer (and they can get rid of Guthrie while they’re at it.)
Love Anderson Live. Do not watch today cause i HATE lauer. always have. yup i will watch today if anderson joins, now i watch good morning america. i do watch 10am today though…that is more like what anderson would bring to the earlier today…
NBC seems to be screwing up every single daypart in a very public manner. I’m beginning to wonder if this is some sort of grand scheme to depress stock prices…
If you watched “30 Rock” over its seven years, it lampooned NBC more than Leno is doing. The final arc of series had the Jack Donaghy character trying to ruin NBC with crappy shows.
But the truth, might be, is that NBC/Universal is a horribly cheap network. And apparently, has no marketing department.
Maybe Comcast’s interest in NBC wasn’t the programming but the coaxial cable with the wider bandwidth?
Matt Lauer is really turning into an ego-maniac right now and as long as he is still at TODAY, it is going to sink even more and more until CBS This Morning takes their place in the ratings and NBC ends up third. My have the mighty have fallen in such a short time, thanks to one idiot in Matt Lauer. I’d like to know who is truly running this program anyways at NBC?!
Anderson Cooper is terrible. His program on CNN (AC360) is consistently ranked practically last of all the evening cable news programs and his daytime talk show flopped during the first year. Anderson has done so poorly with the ratings that if he takes the job at Today, he will likely cause the Today Show to fall below the CBS morning show. I hope Anderson Cooper does get the spot at the Today Show.
What you claim about AC360 (their ratings have been up for months and they beat MSNBC and Faux on numerous occasions) is simply false and he is getting 60 Minutes excellent ratings as well.
They really want to get rid of Matt Lauer? Is Jack Donaghy tanking NBC?
NBC truly underestimated the audience by getting rid of Anne Curry! Bad move #1!!
Yes, NBC surely DID underestimate us.
So, to save their morning show, NBC is trying to hire the guy whose daytime show was just cancelled. Bold strategy.
I love Matt Lauer and if he leaves, I am done. I really don’t think Willie fits in at all. Matt Lauer is the lead on the show. Anderson Cooper is fine on CNN but on the Today Show??? I don’t think so. I liked Ann Curry too but they just didn’t click. KEEP MATT LAUER he is the best!
NO!!!!! DONT GET RID OF MATT,I WILL NOT WATCH THE TODAY SHOW!!! WHY R YOU PEOPLE GETTING RID OF EVERYONE??? LEAVE MATT!!!
Anderson’s best job was hosting The Mole! That show was awesome.
WHY we no longer have a TV/
