OSCARS: Shirley Bassey To Make First-Ever Appearance On Telecast

Would a tribute to the James Bond franchise’s 50th anniversary be complete without the woman who sang the theme song to Goldfinger? Shirley Bassey will make her first-ever appearance on the Oscars on February 24, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today. They also said that composer-arranger William Ross will conduct the orchestra, marking the third time he has done so for the Academy Awards. Here’s the release on Bassey:

  1. Great move. Dame Bassey is a true legend. She will add a touch of class to the night. Can’t wait. Good going Craig and Neil.

  2. Interesting. I’m sure they’re trying to get Connery, along with all of the other Bonds. But if Broccoli and Wilson couldn’t even get him to participate in a 50th Anniv. talk or the documentary, then it’s a long shot. Still…would be a great coup (and great for ratings)!

    1. Worst comes to worst, they should get Darrell Hammond to come out as Connery. That’ll make him sorry he didn’t show up! :-)

    2. I hope they can get Connery too but hasn’t it been speculated he’s in rather poor health, hence the almost complete disappearance from the public eye?

In any state, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to have all the Bonds on stage together; I hope somehow they are able to pull it off.

  3. Wow! I just might watch this year’s show(off). But something tells me that this is going to turn out to be a missed opportunity. And a great one – just imagine Dame Shirley Bassey and Adele singing together live. Talk about BOOM!

  4. Why announce every detail of the show?? It means there’s very little reason to watch (other than the odd award that isn’t a lock)

  5. Dame Shirley Bassey can’t wait for the Oscars ! Went to all her concerts in NYC. One of the most beautiful voices ever !
Hoping she will decide to do a tour in the USA !

  6. Clearly, the most memorable and meaningful tribute to the James Bond film series would incorporate an on stage appearance by Sean Connery, the first and best actor to portray the role, Daniel Craig, the current Bond, Roger Moore, the most prolific Bond, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan. Connery has had a contentious relationship with the original producers, Broccoli and Saltzman, who are now deceased, over salary and royalties from the films; however, Connery has maintained a good relationship with the Academy and he was honored for his performance in a non-Bond role in DePalma’s “The Untouchables”. Consequently, he should make every effort to attend fo this once in a lifetime occasion.

  7. Shirley Bassey has a great voice but tends to shout rather than sing especially singing Goldfinger, So perhaps she will sing Diamonds are for ever instead, That is just my opinion.
But no one can sing Solitaire like the late Karen Carpenter.
I want to see Adele Skyfall is brilliant

  8. dame shirley the voice from tiger bay cardiff wales living proof matters not
where you are from talent will take you to the top
